depends on market conditions. I scalp the ES and typically hold for under 30 seconds, but in current market conditions, it might take a minute or two just for the fill on a 1-tick winner. I usually play for 1-2 ticks, thus the answer is "depends how long it takes the market to move 1-2 ticks"

I was trying to manipulate the spread between the front and back months on the ES yesterday and it worked out reasonably well. Can someone explain to me why pushing down the back month price while pushing up the front month worked out far more often for me (net profit wise as well as %-wise)...

I heard there are traders that trade 50-100 lots and average 50 ticks a day consistently. Does that sound reasonable?

I don't mean with limit orders, but with market orders. I was using ameritrade for stocks, for example, and I found that many of my most crucial market trades were getting quite delayed, even past their 5 sec guarantee, and that meant a few cents in some cases.
