Problems countertrend trading the index futures

Agreed the sample size has to be large enough (and the trading time frame long enough) to provide a meaningful picture of what's happening.

The eval companies also provide analytics for you so I can study those as well.

Problems countertrend trading the index futures

Don't think I ever backtested anything, mostly because of all the negative information I'd gotten about that exercise in the distant past. But memory fails me about the specifics. But then I also always thought paper trading was useless since you're not trading with real funds. I've found to my...

Problems countertrend trading the index futures

You're right it trended down after about 9:45am. Don't know why I thought otherwise, bad memory. Think I had been profitable until around 10am so maybe that was why I thought I remembered it trending up after the open.

Problems countertrend trading the index futures

I had been having similar problems with the YM when I decided to try another emini for a change. At first I was very surprised and happy with how the NQ behaved, was so much unlike the YM. The NQ's volatility, especially at market open, made for some very fast profits the first 15 minutes...

Appreciate the advice weisman02. The market patterns do always repeat don't they.

Problems countertrend trading the index futures

Yup. The most discouraging thing about this of course is that all I know is countertrend trading, I really have no 'safe' technique for entering a trend, especially if it doesn't pull back much to provide relatively safe entry points. I've come to expect days like this, after several good days...

Problems countertrend trading the index futures

I could look at the detail and yes up until the east coast lunch hour it was pretty much a ranging situation, but changed into a down trend some time during the lunch hour. My mistake (as always) was waiting to enter whenever it pulled back 'enough'. I'm aware of patterns where it takes a step...

Yeah bitch-slapped would be accurate. Smarting.

Thx traderking007. Indeed I need to find an edge for days like that. On the range-trading days I do well regardless if it starts gapped up or down. It's just days like today that I feel like I'm 'in their crosshairs'.

Problems countertrend trading the index futures

So here I'm asking for comments about the difficulties I experience trying to recognize a trending NQ day in time to avoid ending up with a colossal loss. In my case I'm actually trying to pass a oneup trader evaluation. I had passed the $25k a month ago but blew the funded part after it had...

    The vertical flip experiment

It's like I was saying at beginning of this thread, just an experiment. My problem of fearing shorting, not sure what triggers it. But thought if I reversed everything I could 'fool' my brain - which is hard-wired to only venture into long trades - to see the downward direction as rising...

I've copied and pasted your instructions. Thank you so much!! Now I can see what additional trouble I can get myself into!

    The vertical flip experiment

Ha! Might have to resort to that if it helps me work up the balls to pull a short ;-) But seriously I hadn't even considered broker liability. That idea in mind I may still revisit that at some point. If Sierra has that capability then I'm almost sure Meta, Ninja, eSignal etc likely do too...

    The vertical flip experiment

Thanks for that tiddlywinks. I did try that feature with Sierra when I was with Transact a while back, but if memory serves (and these days it usually doesn't!) I couldn't get the DOM to reverse. But I love Sierra and may go back to that. The R Trader Pro is free with free data feed so using...

    The vertical flip experiment

Hear you there. It's how I lost my first OneUp Trader eval last week - letting the market 'breathe' while in trades. Tight stops certainly didn't work, but allowing it to free-fall while in a trade, waiting for the reversal that never came is always a recipe for a large drawdown.

    The vertical flip experiment

Good points. Not as if I'd never been burned going short! Last week was a good example of that - the markets were so panicky I should've stayed away regardless of direction. Volatility was not my friend, when you use tight stops of 10-20 ticks and the market rapidly jerks up/down upwards of 100...

    The vertical flip experiment

Yup Sekiyo, but as I was saying there are problems with that, one I noticed right away- the cursor moves opposite from how I move my hand. And I think also the text and everything else is upside down. But the contrary cursor movement might present another 'brain re-wiring' problem!

    The vertical flip experiment

Thanks trdes, not a waste of time at all! You've made valid points. I will say that I've long since lost count of the number of times I've had to 'cover my longs'! I still want to try it though, if I find a platform that can do it. I'd of course let everyone here know how it works out.
