Trend following was called dead many time in last decades. Always came back from the dead with vengeance dwarfing all other types of trading. 2 years is nothing for long term trend following.

Pretty much this above and also mainly because price is a function of events which happen unexpectedly (be it scandal in the company, earnings surprise etc.) and not function of past price action.
