The art of the "stop loss"

If you have your stop loss positioned correctly you should find this 'event' evens out ie the number of times you see price come back is about the same number as those that keep on going in the same direction, over a good number of trades. If otherwise, backtest and reposition your stops.

Earnings reports- Why do they seem to to trash stocks

Yes I've traded GOOG quite a few times. For me it is an excellent stock because of its volatility and volume.

Earnings reports- Why do they seem to to trash stocks

I've been trading earnings reports for a number of years now. As someone said anything can, and it does happen. I only trade after the report comes out. Earnings reports arre good because they can create a lot ot price volatility. I only trade stocks that had received positive earnings news...

I use small lot sizes cuz I'm a noob ($9.63 profit today!) *pic*

I understand. With such small moves, price could quickly get away from you on the -ve side, and with a larger size the loss could be significant in relation to your capital. Make sure what you risk is well in control and a small part of your capital. Commission is a problem for you as you...

I need some guidance on a career in trading...

Start with the end in mind. What is your objective from a career/wealth point of view. Until you get that sorted out in your mind you will remain confused.

I use small lot sizes cuz I'm a noob ($9.63 profit today!) *pic*

IronFist, if you classify yourself as a noob then you don't really know what you're doing or haven't yet got a complete system. Until you have made money consistently over a six month or more period you should trade at 100/200 share size to preserve your capital.

    On "gaps"

In my experience, trading the assumption that a gap will be filled, or the opposite, are both profitable trading strategies (certainly for earnings gaps). The key is to consistently trade one way, either long or short, to profit. Personally I trade NYSE stocks long (assuming a gap won't be...

Serious newbie in search for knowledge

Kiaora Chirag, You won't go far wrong if you follow the advice of War Eagle at the start of the thread and Steve T. You'll make plenty of mistakes for sure but if you initially trade small and sensibly ramp up as your account grows they won't hurt you in the long run. All the best

    Trailing stop

I use a trailing stop for swing trades but not day trades. I use IB but not their trailing stops. At the end of every day on swing trades I manually adjust the stop if the EOD price is in my favour.

Letting losses ride and living in denial

If what you have done has viotated your trading plan...then get out of the trade. Now. Just do it, you need a clean slate to start afresh. You'll feel much better. Think about this... in ten days time you could be sitting with a $30,000 unrealised loss. How will you feel then?

Advice on keeping a Good Journal?

If you're serious about trading you need to keep a journal. I've used my journals many many times to test ideas on altering strategies or developing new ones. Without the journal data any type of testing would have been impossible or at best very difficult. Keep detailed info on all your...

    GOOG today

GOOG was my savior on Friday after a poor run of trading reports during the week. A short on GOOG at the open netted 12 points for the day, leaving a plus for the week of over 10 points.

News - Enough of an Edge?

I have a couple of strategies that trade news. The news type is very specific and regular that provides plenty of price movement. It makes reasonably consistant money but the current size isn't large enough to make a living - when the account is x10 bigger - no problem:) A good source of...
