    IB TWS reacting slowly

I've had something similar happen, the last time today. TWS was running so slowly that my whole system seemed frozen. I opened up the directory containing the configuration files under JTS and over 10000 files related to Nia had been generated there. I don't know the source of the problem...

Think PEs indicate equities are cheap?

Interesting chart. I would like to see a chart that attempts to "normalize" P/E for different interest rate levels. I don't think you can use absolute measures of cheap or expensive P/E when short rates range from <1% to greater than 15%.

Doctors Ban More Medical Schools.....Greater Number of Students....Protect Incomes...

As a side note, if anyone had bothered to read the article they would have noted it had absolutely nothing to do with the AMA. The article was published in a journal of the British Medical Association.

Why can't "the solution" be LOWER taxes, NO deficits, SMALLER government...?

What is your point? In 1918 the minimum rate was 12% (reduced to 8% in 1919) on $4m (~$55,000 in current dollars) income. Only 5% paid federal income taxes so you can't use as this an example of high taxation either. What you seem to be missing is that this tax increase was to support...

Why can't "the solution" be LOWER taxes, NO deficits, SMALLER government...?

Here is the history of the maximum tax rate courtesy of a report from The John M. Olin Center for Law, Economics, and Business at the Harvard Law School. As you can see the max. rate (77%) during WWI was for incomes greater than $1mm (the equivalent of $13.36 million in 2006 dollars). So while...

Why can't "the solution" be LOWER taxes, NO deficits, SMALLER government...?

This may be true in Latin America or even Italy, but there has never been an epidemic of conducting business off the books here. The same people who were doing it in the '70s are probably still doing it today; it's not how much they have to pay, it is that they have to pay. BTW, I don't recall...

Why can't "the solution" be LOWER taxes, NO deficits, SMALLER government...?

Wouldn't that be expected?: as people get older they earn more. In fact I could have been one of them (banking wasn't such a great payer in 1979).

betting on horse races vs. trading

Yoohoo - I don't think you're understanding 'zero sum'. A positive sum game implies a net increase in wealth across all participants. In horse race betting as in other gambling there is no net wealth increase. Arguably the same is true of trading. However, investing is positive sum.

McCain = bullish, Obama = bearish for stocks?

I always figured that with Republicans coming into office investors would load up on stocks (drive up prices, lower returns) in anticipation of good times, while with incoming dems they would dump stocks (lower prices, increase returns) because of all the economic ills dems represent. I...

betting on horse races vs. trading

There was a terrific book written about 20 years ago by Bill Ziemba called "Beat the Racetrack." Ziemba is an academic whose approach to the betting/investing world is similar to Ed Thorp's, i.e., exploit inefficiencies with Kelly betting. My takeaway from his book, at least what I...

    Worst TWS Yet?

I think I found the solution to my problem. It seems that the jre since update 6 (as near as I can figure) has been running more restrictively. For example with update 7 my preference were no longer being written to my jts directory (which was under my usual login id as power user). Prior to...

    Worst TWS Yet?

I had an issue with 885 (now .7) at startup where I would get the splash screen, at which point it would hang. I then rolled back to 882 and didn't have the problem anymore. Yesterday I tried with 885 again and it ran fine. This morning same problem with its hanging again. It turns out...

Globex Time & Sales from CME

Slickcharts- Thanks for making this data available. It has been a great help. I noticed there are several dates missing for the 2008 year. Is there any way you can fill in the gaps? Thanks.

Let's talk about McClellan Oscillator and Summation index

I know nothing about McClellan oscillators but in researching them I see they are derived from stock market advance-decline numbers. So why apply it to Yen? It makes no sense.

    Ideas for struggling traders

I remember when the bond futures closing at 3pm (NY) was a big deal (years ago) but now with electronic trading extending well beyond 3, I don't see the need for bond traders coming into the S&P then. Something does seem to happen starting at 3pm but I don't think its bonds anymore.

    Trading For Living - S&P 500 Market.

From the QCharts site, they create something called Breadthalizer statistics from all US stocks (without saying what that includes but it appears to be NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ). If OP says what symbol she's using it would be easy to look up what her AD indicator is. Regarding AD it...

    ES Journal Archive (2006 - 2008)

When the Value Line futures, whose underlying index is a geometric average, came out there was a lot of discussion of geometric vs. arithmetic. As I recall the problem with arithmetic is that if you have a portfolio indexed at 100 and it drops to 90%, you have lost 10% but if it then goes back...

DDE to Excel to new formula back to chart?

EdgeHunter- Thanks for the detailed explanation. Interesting that different feeds have such varying cpu usage. My data feed at the time was eSignal. At the time, I attributed my lack of success to problems with Excel/DDE, not the feed, so I dropped the project. I might have to revisit...

DDE to Excel to new formula back to chart?

EdgeHunter- Very impressive. Some time ago I tried to do something similar within excel (with DDE) but could only use about 60 S&P stocks (which is more than 50% of the total market cap) before excel would consume nearly all my cpu cycles. Needless to say, I abandoned excel and dde...

DDE to Excel to new formula back to chart?

Have you tried it? In general a chart is linked to a data range: change the data in the range and the chart changes. DDE is a curse for anyone trying to manipulate real time data in Excel. If you can use an activeX control to get your data, you'll have more flexibilty in capturing and...
