    VIX ETF/Futures/Options Discussion Thread

They should be as they likely need to be. Insane how many shares of the ETNs have been created. That recent XIV pullback was an awesome entry point. Even start of day today was a good entry point with march 19% above spot and april 13% above march. Ridiculously steep curve with a decent...

    VIX ETF/Futures/Options Discussion Thread

atticus> That makes sense. Wouldn't mind a move up to 8.25...would be nice for the 1/2 position. However, just not comfortable being short VIX even with such an attractive roll in the face of the macro climate. If I wanted to be short vol, I think a better trade with a loss floor is being long...

    VIX ETF/Futures/Options Discussion Thread

Another indicator I have been keeping an eye out on is the VIN/VIF ratio vs the VIX. Near term IV spiked today vs OTM IV today which definitely shows the reason for the move in VIX. Still don't see the reason for the near term options to see such a vol spike. Here is the chart I have been tracking:

    VIX ETF/Futures/Options Discussion Thread

Ya I definitely think its time to get out for the short term. Made an absolute rookie mistake today, put my limit sell for the position at 7.69 and then ended up following that down all the way through 7.5. Closed half the position and kept the other half. Any views on the jump in VIX? Seems...

    VIX ETF/Futures/Options Discussion Thread

Lets get a thread going discussing VIX/VIX-related product space. Vol of vol seems to be the best instrument to trade in this climate because there are some interesting dynamics playing out. The first is that correlations rising is great for volatility sensitivity meaning greater ups and downs...

Being good at video games is good experience

No. Those guys are too drugged up to realize that there were no women in the room....just a bunch of drugged out kids playing video games.

Stanford MBA vs Berkeley Financial Engineering

To get a job in S&T at a bulge bracket bank or get one of those coveted PE/HF jobs, you will almost definitely need an MBA from a top tier school. To enter a top bank, you have three options: A) you went to a top undergrad school that is heavily recruited and you went in as an analyst. B) you...

Is becoming a quant a waste of time?

GS has it all wrong having quants work on structured products, modeling credit risks, and finding anomalies. They need to get a few 3.0 high school graduates or GED equivalents who can "think on their feet" and "read market sentiment". Pshh, as if increasing liquidity or complex products do...

    MBA Internships at prop firms?

Do you mean a prop firm as in the ones touted here (you provide capital, they give execution, "arcades")? (Bright etc) Or do you mean prop firms where you trade the firms money, get salary plus bonus and resemble the prop desks of ibanks? (drw, wolverine etc) The first variety don't provide...

    The best hedge fund ever?

seems to be like a leveraged trend following fund. don't see anything impressive here. That is IF they are even legit.

    Quant?

I wouldn't say econometrics or even finance knowledge is necessary. There are plenty of physics/math etc PhDs who entered as quants who have next to no experience in finance (generally they would read up on some guides for a general overview). There are plenty of places that DO NOT prefer...

    Quant?

What you need to realize is that not all quants work in the same areas. There are quants in trading (building systems and models to make trading decisions from), pricing (say a method to price CDOs or a structured product for a customer), and risk management (credit risk, trading risk and what...

    $100B hedge fund

Olsen's primary business always has been data. Their tick database is one of the most comprehensive in the world because they were the first guys to start collecting high freq data in currencies (and now collect data on pretty much everything). They got hit badly during Hurricane Katrina but...

    Gamma determination

Grant> It depends on the senario. In the position you outlined your gamma is not very high as its ITM (as majorursa noted). Gamma is a very important measure. Being delta hedged will really be of no use at all if your gamma is high as your risk exposure increases. If the gamma in that...

    Gamma determination

It tells you how much the delta of the option changes once the underlying changes as well. A portfolio that is delta neutral doesn't really tell you anything unless the gamma is quoted as well. Having a delta neutral portfolio will not be of much help if the gamma is large. You can get more...

    Wealth of Nations worth reading?

Jfic> And who will build the "robots"? Who will design them? You see nothing will ever be free. The reason you should read Wealth of Nations is to get an understanding of what drives a capitalist society and the reasons Adam Smith used to argue his points. We do live in a capitalist...

Will anyone ever beat Zangar's World Record of turning $10k into 42million in 18 mos?

Oanda is actually by far the best broker in the retail FX arena. If you said FXCM I would agree with you though ;).
