covered call profit and loss question

By me, I meant I didn't follow my rules and take the loss when they said I should. 1st rule is always stick to the plan and don't think about it. I'm not sure what you mean by sticky capital... I could have bought the puts back but I didn't. Always have you entry, exit and stop decided...

Who is really making a living trading options??

You're right on the risk part. If you follow rules of risk & capital mgmt., but a lot don't. People like to trade stocks like AAPL with options, but don't have enough account to take delivery. To me that is additional risk over the normal risk/rewad ration.

Who is really making a living trading options??

The edge of account size in an options trade is if you sell naked PUTs and don't have enough funds to take delivery, you have to buy them back at market whick could be a nastly loss. I may take a paper loss getting assigned the stock, but then sell calls to get rid of them at a profit. It...

Who is really making a living trading options??

What time frame are you talking about when you say trading? I know people day trade using options for the additional leverage. I can't figure how that is profitable as you are always out the premium at the start. I have one strategy that works well for me and I don't mind sharing since I'm...

    AAPL Earnings - Oct 18

I feel there is no absolute correlation between GOOG and AAPL, but I also watch how people react / over react to earnings on GOOG. I don't give it much weight, but I still watch it. Mind you I trade both stocks so I watch them anyway. I'm going bullish on AAPL for earnings. I wrote 5 -...

covered call profit and loss question

Like I said I've done it for years. (aprox 3 1/2) So yes it can be profitable. DotCom - nope wasn't trading options at all then, and yes I lost a bundle as I was fairly new to trading. 9/11 - yes this was one strategy that made me money. (I will explain in a moment how). flash crash blew...

covered call profit and loss question

I use TDWaterhouse and when I write options I am credited as of the processed date. If I sell CCs today my account will get credited by the end of business tomorrow. I believe my Think or Swim account and IB account work the same way, I just didn't take the time to verify that. Naked...

covered call profit and loss question

I've used that strategy for years and I am making money. Like investing in stocks (vs trading) you have to have set limits to bail on a losing trade and to cash in on the winners. I only use this on a stock that I intend on holding long term anyway and so it just adds income to the dividends...

How much money have you lost before figuring it out???

Worst case you learn how to manage your investments better. Even if I were to quit trading, I would still look after my investments / retirement funds myself. Maybe you never figure it out?? I've had a fabulous year so far with profits increasing every month just to get my ass handed to me...

How do u know u have made it in daytrading?

Once in a while it happens. I often somewhat hedge some of my option plays and have often missed out on big moves like a $50 pop in GOOG. However last week, I took a 20k loss to get rid of option I had on AAPL and got out just in time for a 60K gain. I ended up with a 45K plus day. Certainly...

How long is your holding time of individual options-trade ?

It so depends on the type of trading. I trade options that are a close to expiry to gain the rapid lossof time premiun in those last few days. I write options and then if the stock move with me or stays put, I'm up the premium. If it move aganst me I get the stock (long or short) and then...

Is Someone Willing to Help an Aspiring Trader?

Too bad there isn't a book out there that explains trading in general with examples of all the types and some examples with pros & cons... I've tried quite a few types of trading and it took a long time to find my groove, but most of it was, the more I learned, the more I found that was out...

How much money have you lost before figuring it out???

Wow... what an entertaining thread! :D First big loss was when the tech bubble burst and my account of about $20k with it. After that I've had a number of large losses up until about 2 years ago. That was when I stopped trying to pick a direction. I realized I would always be at risk if I...

How do u know u have made it in daytrading?

Anyone remember Y2K? Wasn't that long ago. I lost my account in the tech bubble when the newbies like myself thought the market was a way to print money! I went back to working and saving and started investing, then swing trading and got back into day trading. I've finally got to where I'm...

Is Someone Willing to Help an Aspiring Trader?

I love trading options, but I write options NOT buy them. I can't see a way to make consistant money paying someone else all hat premium. Now the downside is the benefit of buying options is the leverage... a few dollars allows you to control a lot of stock. Writing options on the other hand...

    High Performance/Speed CSV File Parser/Reader

Code it in .NET to utilize multi core. Use a quad core system with at least 8Gb RAM and OS on one SSD drive and data on RAID 5 SSD. Then you can expect to parse probably about 100k records per sec or better.

    Scanning

Will it work with getting option with high $ premiums? I currently trade GOOG & AAPL for premiums. They have been great since they are weekly. I would like to find a way to find more candidates of options with large prem for ATM strikes. I can probably build one, but why if there is already...

    taxes and finding successful traders

I'm in Canada so the tax part may be different. Here you pay capital gains on profits taken (closed trades) during the year. Then there can be any number of expenses that you may be able to deduct such as interest used to earn etc. There could be some traders interested. I had a number of...

Is Someone Willing to Help an Aspiring Trader?

Good idea actually. A new trader could never afford to pay enough to interest a good trader... but someone to help with the screening, accounting and other grunt work could be worth a lot more than money! What kind of skills or background do you have that you could offer to temp a mentor...
