What are the arguments against index investing?

What are the arguments against index investing? There are many ways one could answer this query. I will offer my own perspective. It depends on (1) what your objectives are, (2) how much effort you can apply, (3) your own set of capabilities. I am a rather successful trader. I don't...

    Anyone looking at zsl

Hi, I saw your question on ZSL and it rang a bell. It is a short 2x ETF based on the price of silver. It is paired with AGQ, which is the long 2x version. I have had very good luck with AGQ, because of the distrust of our fiat system, and when AGQ is in trouble (like when JPM is shorting...

    Giving up on day trading?

HI, BEINGPROF... A few more words at you. You asked: "given equal information, each group will percieve the information differently". Yes, I think so. Here's an example. Let's say a large new open pit mining operation is floating a new issue of stock. Two different groups of...

    Giving up on day trading?

Here is something for you to look at. I do a lot of trading in Silver Miners and ETF's. Now, I AM NOT recommending this to you, since I know nothing about your situation, your goals, etc. But here is a picture of the early morning of October 13, 2010 drawn by a guy who has made a lot of...

    Giving up on day trading?

Here is a little more on how to improve your success. I have had the good fortune to do fairly well, except for a few REALLY STUPID ERRORS. Were it not for them, I would have done a lot better. Bonehead mistakes can hurt. One of the posters recently said that the results of a system of...

Interesting! You go for the less volatile stocks, but I trader ONLY in volatile ones. As Willy Sutton said about banks, "That's where the money is!"

Hello, BeingProfitable. Nice post -- very thought provoking. I would like to pose a question to you on efficient markets. If my concepts are out of whack, let me know. When we talk of efficient markets, we are assumiing a set of knowledge which becomes widely known to all investors, and...

    Giving up on day trading?

Statements like this seem to be typical of this ET board. There is NOTHING AT ALL RANDOM in price movements. Yes, Garcia, I read "Randon Walk..." too. It's TRIPE. When I first learned to program computers in the 60's, one of the first things I did was the production of a set of "random"...

OUT OF BED, GUYS! ON YOUR FEET! TIME TO START TRADING! Throughout the entire world, events have been occurring since you turned off your computer last night. Maybe some yahoo was shot in South Africa, the miners in Indonesia are succumbing en masse to a viral infection, the leaders in...

Gotta disagree with you. The WIN RATE is one of the factors used in calculating the MATHEMATICAL EXPECTATION of bets. The use of reliable long term data in making these calulations is vital to long term success.

Here we go again! It looks like I have generated some interest in the methods I use, so I will begin giving some specific info on the things I have learned over the years. Before we go any further, let me repeat what I said previously. Learn math. It is the LANGUAGE of investing, and...

Here are some ideas from an old guy who IS A SUCCESSFUL TRADER. First of all, some strange advice: DO NOT TRY TO MAKE DOLLARS. If you go to a friend and say "I made $1,000 yesterday, and it only took me 50 years." he will take you for an idiot. Obviously the goal is NOT JUST THE DOLLARS...

Which Moving Averages (and Other Technical Indicators) Do the Big Players Use...

I would like to contribute a few of my ideas for the group's consideration. Maybe I can shed some light on a few of the problem areas that arise in investing. By way of introduction, I am an old guy, retired from 40 years of computer programming, now living in the mountains of Virginia. I'm...

Which Moving Averages (and Other Technical Indicators) Do the Big Players Use...

Scalping? Almost. I trade only high volatility stuff -- 2x, 3x ETFs and "risky" stocks. Almost invariably it would be classed as "high beta". As far as winning % being a useless metric, you might be interested in studying probability and mathematical expectation.

Which Moving Averages (and Other Technical Indicators) Do the Big Players Use...

My first post. My approach is skepticism regarding any of the indicators that are bandied about. I've examined several in detail and found all of them wanting in one way or another. For example, when the TA'er draws lines on his chart, he is generally connecting the high (or low) of a...
