lol I think you guys forget that when you're connection goes down it'll be pretty hard to send a SMS over the internet ;) You'd need an outside resource like a server on a different network that constantly pings your machine and sends off an sms, email, whatever once it doesn't receive a reply

I don't have direct comparisons available right now but you can easily do them yourself. I know that Firebird SQL compared to MS SQL is a little bit slower and also to MySQL. However, it's slower compared to MySQL only because MySQL still hasn't implemented stored procedures and triggers yet...

Before spending tons of money for a MS SQL you might wanna check out Firebird Sql. They provide a reeeally good .net provider. The database is capable of doing stored procedures, triggers, etc. And all of that is open source

API is an application programming interface. Think of it as an interface which allows you to send "messages" or functions to the program from an outside source. It's like telling somebody to shut the window and he will do it ;) Instaquote is an equities/options platform

Yes, Kawabunga has an API. It uses FIX API as well some kind of http API for web based order entry. If you know FIX it's the industry standard financial API and really good. Their documentation however is still in draft form but if you know a bit about it you will do good.
