Dollar Collapse Plunges S&P 500 Back To 1996

I agree. Many Asian countries (China included) built their prosperity through their weak-currency driven exports.

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

India is removing STT (securities transaction tax) and also lowering income tax rates drastically from 2011. http://business.rediff.com/report/2009/aug/12/new-direct-taxes-code-released.htm

Here's real verifiable proof 90% lose

True, but the college football athelete contemplating going pro has some solid edge - physical ability, talent, and years of consistent performance etc. How many beginner pro daytraders have an edge in the first place?

    Blackberry or IPHONE

I had a look at Blackberrys and Nokias last weekend. Accessing the internet is VERY cumbersome on them IMHO, a strain on both eyes and fingers. I found the IPhone easiest to use. Has anyone placed trades using a smartphone? What have your experiences been? Log-in problems, order hang...

WSJ: Better to "set the money on fire" than give it to GM to reinforce future losses

Question: Lets say the Big Three go bankrupt. Toyota, Honda will then surely expand their manufacturing base in the US. They employ most/all the workers laid off by the Big Three and produce much better quality vehicles too. What is the problem with that?

    Irresponsible IB

gangof4, You seem to be a large size trader. Why dont you keep the direct tel numbers of such "managers with a clue" on your speed-dial? Given the large volumes that you trade, I would think that you will want the most competent response to your situation everytime. I am sure IB or any...

Tax on Trades Should Be Part of Rescue Plan, Some Democrats Say

That is very scary stuff. Classic example of a govt trying to raise tax revenues but actually ends up killing the golden goose.

Request for Chart of Pakistan Short Selling Ban

Folks, A few days ago on Fast Money, I saw a chart of the Karachi Stock Index which showed what happened when the government of Pakistan imposed a ban on short selling (the index fell a lot further in the subsequent months). Does anyone have that image or a link to it? I want to e-mail it...

How can stops be protected against fake gaps ?

OldTrader, Please read my first post re: CVC and its price action on 4Sep. I have seen similar situations many times on the NYSE and AMEX. Lets say that the previous day's range on a stock is between 29 and 30 and closes at 29.50. The next day it opens gap down and opens at 25.00 on...

How can stops be protected against fake gaps ?

DD2, Thanks for responding, your post is informative. I infer that you do not use overnight stops. How then would you respond to a situation where your stock gaps up (or down) big time against your position? Would you wait a few minutes to see if the gap is real (and in the process...

How can stops be protected against fake gaps ?

Thank you, having a threshold volume/tick filter before the stop executes is a good idea. But nonetheless, I just wish such opening prints were more fluid on the NYSE. An opening gap of 10% which quickly disappears after 2-3 tics just causes mayhem for swing/position traders.

How can stops be protected against fake gaps ?

Yes, I am quite certain that CVC's morning activity today was a data error. All the major data providers have the same data for the 9:31 bar so it is not data-provider specific; probably the fault of the exchange. But even it is a data error, would stops underneath have been triggered because...

How can stops be protected against fake gaps ?

stevegee, Thank you for posting. I dont have a problem with gaps, it is a part of the business. But it's the fake gaps like the one on CVC today that concern me. The CME busts trades that are outside its permitted price band. Will the NYSE do the same with CVC I wonder...

How can stops be protected against fake gaps ?

Folks, I am looking at a chart of CVC. The opening prints at 9:31 AM today had the stock gapping down at 29.00-28.50 compared with yesterday’s close of 31.54 albeit on small volume (500). Then sanity was restored and the stock gapped up and started quoting at 31.45 from 9:32 AM...

    International markets

This is IB's commission schedule for European stocks: http://individuals.interactivebrokers.com/en/accounts/fees/commission.php?ib_entity=llc Looks like 0.1% commissions are the standard in Europe. UK's stamp duty must be crushing trading activities there.

    International markets

I have heard that daytrading the European markets is not a viable proposition because of the high commissions and wide spreads. But, does anyone here SWING TRADE European stocks? If so what have your experiences been? Seems to me that many European stocks have sufficient liquidity to be...
