    Dividend mining

Hey thanks for the info. I just did 40 hrs worth of research in the time it took to read the replies to this thread. Am I crushed? Well, a bit. But I saved 39.8 hrs in the process so thanks for the week off fellas!

    Dividend mining

I hadn't thought about the tax implications so no, that wasn't my intent off the bat. Example: -$20,000 account -Capture 4 transactions/mo on equities paying 6% yield. $10,000 into one equity at a time (4x) $10,000 to hedge the market exposure (4x) 4 dividends captured @ 1.5% ea = $600...

    Dividend mining

Would it be possible to buy a stock on or day before it's ex-dividend date, capture the dividend and then sell? Also, hedge the position with a bear index or sector etf? Could I rotate my capital to capture, say, 5 transaction per month. Market exposure could be near zero. It does not...

90% tax on wall street workers - how does this affect traders?

This law is like a second prescription to treat the side-effects of the first one. Pretty soon you're taking 6 pills a meal to counteract all the side effects. How about stop taking drugs, eat healthy and exercise. But that requires your dealer to admit he's part of the problem...

The "hot woman, crappy stock" portfolio

That approach was a slam dunk with LULU. Lululemon Athletica (hugely popular in Canada, not sure about penetration in the USA) makes ridiculously overpriced "yoga lifestyle clothing". Like apparently you need $120 stretch pants just to do yoga. Butts look great, and I make a killing in my...

Socialised health care in Canada poll

I'm Canadian. A recent anecdote for what it's worth. My father went to the ER with chest pain on Jan.25. He was admitted, had an angiogram on the 28th, and a triple-bypass on the 29th. He was discharged on Feb. 3rd. Cost out of pocket $0.

Amazing Quote from the Wife of Wall Street Exec

I agree completely with the statement that it is how parents handle financial loss that determines to a large extent how it affects the children. My parents handled it somewhat poorly back in 1989 and as a result, I am near obsessed with money and (the absense of) debt. I do have a very...

I still don't understand how averaging *up* is profitable

A distinction must be made between what defines a "trend" and what defines a "pullback" or just general price action. To me, trend implies the macro picture and therefore if the trend is down, buying more is stupid. If the trend is up then buying more must be smart. This does not preclude...

I still don't understand how averaging *up* is profitable

Adding to a position in an uptrend makes more sense than adding to one in a downtrend. Liquidate the entire position when it your stop is hit for the last add. Adding in a downtrend is logical if your holding period is infinity or if you're Warren Buffett.

Tiny 3 may eventually file Chapter 7 bankrupty protection

Without unions, and guys like you running the companies, the workers would be paid $3 bucks an hour. Gettelfinger is the worker's equivalent of Carl Ichan- a lobbyist with leverage. Bankruptcy is the equivalent of a management strike- rip up the contract we're not continuing until we get our...

Why is GM failing so bad?

How did we get to the point where someone with a pension is viewed as greedy? Since when did a regular joe-worker lose the right to collectively bargain for and gain the benefit of recieving part of his income after retirement, instead of on his weekly cheque? Time was a pension was a pretty...

    The airline stocks bottom-fishing thread

Bias disclosure: I work in the airline industry (Canada) for my regular job. Mergers throw too many variables into the mix in my opinion, with too many regulatory, government, labour, and economic variables involved to present a tradeable storyline. I don't see the NW/Delta merger as...

This is what a 'bank run' looks like...

banks with all lowercase names are not to be trusted. I prefer CAPS LOCK banks myself, or at least traditionally punctuated.

You Only Need $5000 to Make a Living

How do you trade a $5000 account and only risk 1.0-2.5% on each position? You dollar limit per trade is $50-125.

LMAO - GM/F/Chrysler bankruptcy is Imminent!!! SUVs Pose a Crises for America

In Canada the press has taken to calling the former 'Big 3' the 'Detroit 3'. They are adept at one thing though- getting government money to subsidize their idiotic operations. Big grant to "keep jobs in Ontario", then three weeks later announce a factory closing all the while playing the...
