Picking MA period is tricky. If it's too short, you get a lot of fake signals. If it's too long, you get lagging signals.

May I suggest Stock Watch Pro http://www.crontech.com/swp ? Looks like a lot of people are having problems with other pkgs and I've never had any issues with SWP. Works with both QCharts and eSignal...

I got around the interface problem: I use Stock Watch Pro http://www.crontech.com/swp and all I had to do is switch the feed from QCharts to eSignal, no need for eSignal to buy QCharts anymore :)

I agree, interest is nonexistent nowadays (however, fed may be doing smth to improve situation in the near future).

I know people who used Qcharts in the past and they had nothing but grief: inconstistent data/no data/bad data, you name it. From my experience, eSignal is the best feed, I plug the feed into SWP http://www.crontech.com/swp for charting and backtesting and no probs whatsoever.

From my experience, Open Book has a very limited value (if any). Most of the time you won't get any indication from it.
