    Is Tradelog or Gainskeeper necessary?

I have only posted on this forum when my name, product, or company has come up in a negative manner. I have contacted the owners of this site and they have allowed me to make a reply to some of the false allegations that a few members have leveled against us (one in particular keeps popping up...

    Is Tradelog or Gainskeeper necessary?

Personally I have found these forums to be mostly negative and full of misrepresentations and trader tax misconceptions. I have tried my best to clear up some of these, but I could spend my life in such forums and then not have the time to continue to make our TradeLog software the best it can...

    Is Tradelog or Gainskeeper necessary?

Then please let me clear up any confusion: TradeLog is not just for very active traders, as we have less expensive versions such as TradeLog 200 for 200 records or less which accomodates approximately 100 or less round trip trades per year. All traders and investors MUST report and adjust...

    Is Tradelog or Gainskeeper necessary?

Once again a statement by someone who refused to use the software as designed, has not used it in years, and is only out to slander our reputation. If this accusation was true we would be out of business and tens of thousands of happy users would not have filed their taxes successfully. So...

    Is Tradelog or Gainskeeper necessary?

I am going out on a limb here to stick up for IB because of all the brokers that we support, IB currently has the most comprehensive trade history reports. I know because I helped design the IB TradeLog flex report which gets imported into TradeLog. I wish all brokers would allow us this...

    Is Tradelog or Gainskeeper necessary?

This is flat out bad tax advice! We have seen many many broker prvided P&L statements that are wrong, mainly due to missing cost basis from previous years. Also none of these broker provided P&L statements calculate and adjust for wash sales which is required by the IRS for reporting on...

    Is Tradelog or Gainskeeper necessary?

Mr. a5519 has not used our software since 2002. He was using a non-US windows setup for date/time, which at the time we did not support because our software was designed primarily for the US market. He could have easily switched to a US date/time windows setting which would have fixed his...

    Is Tradelog or Gainskeeper necessary?

We have many Vista users and have tens thousands of users who successfully filed their taxes using our TradeLog software in the past 8 years. To date we have not had one return come back from the IRS due to our gains & losses report.

    Is Tradelog or Gainskeeper necessary?

If you are MTM and everything matches then you really don't need Tradelog or Gainskeeper. The main reason you would use TradeLog is when things don't match up which happens to be quite often, or you need to calculate wash sales, or you wish to do some analysis on your trade history.

Do not use tradelog for your taxes

That's not quite what I said. What I said was EVERYONE should back up the data on their PC! Doing so using a local removable device such as as CD, DVD, hard drive, or memory stick is preferred by users who do not want to have their data stored by a 3rd party. But the web option exists if you...

Do not use tradelog for your taxes

PS: I would love to hear your comments about wash sales between stocks and options trades and between options and options.

Do not use tradelog for your taxes

TradeLog data files are plain text and extremely small and in no way "bog down" your PC. And since most PC users have some sort of backup procedure for their PC, this is not a problem. PS: Anyone who uses a PC and does not backup their data is asking for trouble. This is not just our...

Do not use tradelog for your taxes

    1. Call during normal support hours 9am-5pm est, Mon-Fri 2. If you get voice mail it means we are on the phone. Leave a message and we ususally call back within the hour. 3. Please do not use profanity as piggie2000 is accustomed to doing in his few posts on this site. Piggie2000, if...

Do not use tradelog for your taxes

Whether you use software that resides on your PC, or a web based service, it still requires an update if your brokerage changes their trade history format. For example, if you import from a broker provided csv file, and your broker adds or changes a column, then the import process may not work...

Trading tax software for last minute filers

I beg to differ with Jeffrey, you cannot trust the import from Fidelity into TurboTax and I would like to illustrate this with a real life example: A trader with only 177 trade transactions from 2007 imported his 2007 trades into TurboTax. There were no missing cost basis trades to deal with...

Trading tax software for last minute filers

It's free tax advice like this that gets traders in trouble with the IRS. Two years ago the IRS came on strong that you MUST enter all your trade details on schedule d and d-1 - see: http://www.edzollars.com/Schedule_D_Instructions_Email.pdf and http://www.nysscpa.org/trustedprof/206/tp4.htm...

Trading tax software for last minute filers

Jeffery, this is exactly where we have seen problems and I will try to break this down: The Short-Term and Long-Term Realized Gain/Loss shown on the 1099 is the same as the online P&L statement which has been shown to be wrong with many of our users. It is also NOT sent to the IRS. The only...

Trading tax software for last minute filers

One last comment: Anyone who thinks this is a painless procedure with no muss, no fuss needs to carefully read this page on Fidelity's web site entitled: "Import Your Fidelity Tax Information into Your TurboTax® Return"...

Trading tax software for last minute filers

PS: This is another misconception that you can simply take the broker provided P&L statment and attach that to your schedule d. I have seen such suggestions on many active trader forums and it is plain wrong.
