I have IB and Tradier account. It's mainly because Tradier supports US stocks only and provides free 1k stocks quote streaming, whereas IB supports other markets and requires purchasing data streams.

First develop a trading system catering your trading needs (trade stocks, forex, futures, options). Then, experiment with tons of trading strategy to see which one generates the maximum profit. And that's about it.

If you are already familiar with python programming, then Quantopian is a good start. But if programming is not your forte, then you can try other alternatives such as CoolTrade, Investfly, NinjaTrader.
