How can the play games to mess with you? Either they make a valid bid or not no?

Thanks spreadgod! SO if I understand correctly, even with an ask price of .10 and a bid price of .11, I could still ask .11 and bid .10. My bid could just remain at the bottom of the pile for a while, and may eventually get filled, or not, and the same with my ask.

If I'm a seller, can I not ask what ever price I want (knowing that I may not sell if the price is too high?) Also, as a seller can't I bid whatever price I want and if the buyer is willing to pay then great? If I'm wrong, then what determines the ask and bid prices?

See, I've only done paper trading so I know very little about the actual trading process. I've been buying at the current price and selling at the current price. I want to know how real trading differs from that. Just a step by step outline of what happens would be very cool. EDIT: I've peen...

Well it's been working like a charm with my paper trades for the past two months. I'd sure like sombody to let me in on how it's eventually going to fail, because I really, REALLY don't want to loose my cash when I start real trading. So if anyone want's to take the time to explain, I'm all ears...

How about 5000 shares at 0.10 per share. It goes up to .11 and I sell. I make $50 minus buy and sell commisions. At eTrade thats $10X2 = $20 so I still come out ahead. If the rate is .005 like at MBT then the commision is going to be $50. IB would be cool, but like I said, I want to just try...

Ok I just read the blurb at the US government web site. So how does that affect me if I have an online trading account with a minimum startup balance of $1000. What's there to stop me from executing a day trade if the money's in my account?

As I mentioned before I'm a beginner, and my only experience is through paper trading. So, I only want to start with the smallest trades possible. If I don't make any money to begin with that's fine as long as I don't loose a whole lot either.
