    New ICE grains in may

That's actually a really good question... I was operating under the assumption that after CBOT expanded trading hours, it was now matching ICE. But am I correct that ... - ICE trades all the way until 5:00 PM CST, but stops trading until 7:00 PM CST.. - CBOT stops at 2:00 PM CST, but...

Glad you wrote that with "all due respect". Grow up.

    New ICE grains in may

There's also a link to the survey on the CME website, just filled it out yesterday. We have gone through 3 quarters of USDA reports being released while the market is trading, and they've been FAR less volatile than earlier years.... when markets often gapped up 4-5% by pit open. These Luddites...

is it possible to start own fund these days?

What you are describing also sounds somewhat like a RIA to me.... You can certainly help clients plan / design / trade portfolios on an individual basis. As far as being a big manager investing a big pool of other peoples money.... probably not the way to go.

Starting a fund / raising capital

I think reaching the 3 yr mark for my fund was a nice milestone. I also received some nice press, write-ups in a couple (smaller) trade magazines. And once you reach $10 mm AUM, you show up on more charts. But even the press coverage is a function of maintaining my performance for 3 years...

is it possible to start own fund these days?

Not to be a wet blanket, but if you are 10-12% a year long/short equity guy.... Why you, instead of 5,000 other established managers out there? Why not invest with Ackman or Loeb or whoever? But if you can answer that question convincingly, then sure, there's definitely the possibility.

Starting a fund / raising capital

Very few were friends / colleagues. I dont think it's because they dislike me.... I like to think its because I've always been coldly professional about the fund. I've never been one to pat them on the shoulder, wink, and tell them I'll make them rich / take care of them. Instead I'm more...

Starting a fund / raising capital

I largely agree with Epic's comments. Just to add a few more thoughts, which I may have also put elsewhere: - I am generally very flexible with my pool / fund, in terms of accepting investors of any size. This is one of the obvious advantages of a fund structure versus managed accounts...

    CBOE Variance Futures

No news at all. I pointed this out to my contact at the CFE, and he basically shrugged. I pointed out if they adjusted the tick multiple, this would also work.... Ie, $10/pt, but each contract priced out of 100 instead of 1000. My FCM is supposedly looking at this, but I'm not wild about...

So they gave me a Quant

Tell him to read a book, and figure it out himself. Not clear to me how you can really "help" him beyond that. He can start with Rishi Narang's "Inside the Black Box" for a non-technical, high-level overview.

    Wall Street Warriors 3

I've cheated at go fish. I remember lying to the umpire in little league, when I said the grounder really didn't touch me. I've never cheated someone on an issue of consequence. A sinner might have a future, but that future won't be as my money manager.

What’s an acceptable max DD for a strategy?

For one of my first outside investors, who had put in something like $250k (roughly 10% of the fund)... I promptly lost 12% for him 2 weeks into his new investment. I was... name it: humiliated, distressed, agonized. But I wrote him an email immediately explaining the loss, and giving him...

A Fund vs. Your Own Money

I'm really not here, subtly or not, trolling for investors... so I'd prefer not get into that. I hope that makes sense. If you're really interested, send me a PM, and I'll send you a link to my firm's database page on IASG.

A Fund vs. Your Own Money

I personally have not, and would not, accept investments from non-accredited investors. And it's not just a regulatory thing, but commo sense as well. Someone making $50k-$100k a year, with a couple hundred k in the bank, do not need to invest in alternative investments. They don't have the...

A Fund vs. Your Own Money

I agree, not likely I'll be accepting investment dollars from pension funds any time soon. But I mean, that *really* is a different can of worms from a business point of view... My investors are currently smaller fund of funds + HNWI. And I think that population can get me to a couple...

A Fund vs. Your Own Money

Ha! Unfortunately, not really. My Sharpe has been pretty consistently high. It was over 2.5 for my first year, and then dipped to something around 1.6 for my second year (cumulative since beginning)... and for the last year has stabilized around 1.9. In my first year, with a pretty...

A Fund vs. Your Own Money

Hard to imagine anyone working for 2/10... I guess I'm in the minority, then, since everyone else seems to hate trading OPM. I personally enjoy it, even at far below $100mm AUM, and it's a nice supplement to my own trading income. The startup process is definitely challenging, which is...

    Taxation of Foreign traders

I believe government debt (t-bills) are specifically excluded from tax / withholding, precisely because the US government desperately wanted to encourage foreign ownership. Other forms of interest earned would be subject to taxation, however.

Can I keep my Sharpe ratio higher then 3 for a second year??

Sure, those arbitrage opportunities do great in most situations... ... but what about the occasional fat-tail?
