How to best let winners run? swingtrading TVIX, VXX, SQQQ

My clients have traditionally had very mediocre results with trailing stops - volatility takes them out of a winner far too soon. We've had good luck modeling trading range long term and scaling into profit targets. It's important NOT to get too greedy with your profit targets. As a...

Great thread. Fascinating. The most telling statement: “nothing kept Byrne’s attention very long”.

Is intervention risk a meaningful consideration for a long-term trade involving Swissie or Yen?

Not from intervention originating from the Swiss National Bank or the Bank of Japan :D The Yen is stuck in limbo courtesy of a moribund society with a flatlining economy, and the Franc is strong thanks to the nefarious machinations of the ECB and the EU

DeepMind's Losses and the Future of Artificial Intelligence

I found the linked article to be long on vague sweeping pronouncements and hopelessly short on substance quite honestly. Almost like a Psychology Professor decided to pronounce himself AI subject matter expert :sneaky::confused:

    The Next Greatest Trade Ever

You will personally not be able to trade swaps unless you’re a billionaire with an ISDA agreement in hand and a major Investment Bank clearing you. I would urge you to explore options volatility spreads and options Bear spreads.

    Index Spread Traders

Unless you are situated at a major prop firm with a very high dollar ECN you are wasting your time if your intent is legitimate arbitrage. It's a pure speed game dominated by names like DRW, Jump, Geneva, Belvidere, Peak 6, etc. etc. By arbitrage I would mean something along the lines of a...

    The Next Greatest Trade Ever

Well of course you can't write history beforehand. But you are right to be concerned about the structural risk that the ECB is introducing into the EU financial system by taking rates so negative over such a protracted period of time - especially because the underlying purpose is for currency...

    The Next Greatest Trade Ever

I tend to have my doubts. The same could have been said about the 2008 housing crisis and subsequent equity / financial markets meltdown - too few saw it and correctly timed it. Soros and Buffett made their trading fortunes over a protracted period of time with multitudes of wise bets.

    The Next Greatest Trade Ever

Draghi isn’t close to being done. He is using negative rates to devalue the Euro against the Dollar. And Oil isn’t the “flight to quality” instrument that it used to be now that North America is the Worlds largest Natural Gas and Crude Oil producer by a comfortable margin.

It is the calculated fair value of the SPREAD between these instruments that dictates buying or selling - one doesn’t necessarily lead the other as a rule.

Arbitragers are taking or making liquidity from other market participants that have other objectives - like hedging or flat price speculators. If you’ve traded exchange cleared futures - you’ve traded with arbitragers.

Poker -- Has your knowledge of poker improved your trading profits?

THE best exchange trader I’ve personally ever met and known won many CHESS tournaments in Middle School and HS. He’d occasionally stuff $200K into a gym bag and head off to Vegas but he really only did that a couple times per year. He enjoyed cards - Baccarat, Black Jack, Poker but he wasn’t...

Poker -- Has your knowledge of poker improved your trading profits?

I honestly get what you are saying and I wouldn’t necessarily disagree on the face of it. I do think that certain kinds of options and spread trading strategies require more cognitive dimensionality than scalping but that’s just my opinion borne out of experience doing it all - I don’t have any...

Poker -- Has your knowledge of poker improved your trading profits?

IMO a great many traders get intimidated into making mistakes. Having said that - I’ll repeat my stance that being a good Poker player doesn’t preordain that person’s prowess in trading financial markets.

And that would depend on what kind of trader you are. Scalping ES is one thing; spreading interest rate Flys is another thing.
