Guy makes $160,000 and barely making it month to month...

Doesn't fit my utility function, unfortunately. First of all, there is no real public transportation to where my house is (Gardiner, NY). There is a Trailways bus ($43.50 round trip), but the bus stop is in New Paltz, NY, some 20 min cab ride to my house. So, at 4 weekends a month, (43.50 bus...

Guy makes $160,000 and barely making it month to month...

Yeah, not having a car would be convenient except that I also have a weekend house in Upstate New York, so I need a vehicle to get there. My 2009 Honda that I bought for 4K a year ago doesn't depreciate much though :)

My first reaction is to say that's whatever studies are showing this got to be wrong, at least on a global scale. There is a thriving rental industry and they obviously make money owning real estate and then renting it out. Intuitively, when choosing between a profitable global industry and a...

    Short Availability

Since you have never worked on Wall Street or at a hedge fund, you have no idea what is and what is not based in reality. I probably deal with more with SLB desks across the street in a course of a week then you did in your entire life. Hell, yeah, I am sensitive to anyone being an asshole...

    Short Availability

which one is that? 'cause (a) having seen plenty SLB desks, I think it's not really true and (b) it's a biased thing to say with respect to that (or any) ethnic group. US stock borrow, while the last remaining vestige of the old times, is way more orderly and sane then many other markets. SLB...

Is the long-term return in government bonds, negative or close to 0%?

Here is a pretty interesting database on the topic: http://www.bankofcanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/crag-database-update-04-05-15.xlsx and a paper onn the same topic: https://journalistsresource.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/MIT-Press_Sovereign-Defaults-and-Debt-Restructurings.pdf My...

    Options contests?

Never heard of this one. The inverse, a real-money option contest that pays virtual cash awards is also known as working for an investment bank.

Who has the best Historical Tick Data?

Anything that would be good enough for back of the envelope kind of stuff? Is kibot or pi trading any good?

Who has the best Historical Tick Data?

Yes, I meant CQG as opposed to CQS (which is a fund) :) This is for personal use, so I can't really afford top shelf stuff like tickdata.

Who has the best Historical Tick Data?

Sorry to revive this :) -- Who provides top of the book and trade data for ETFs/stocks, at a reasonable price? -- Is it possible to buy stock data a la carte, by symbol and date range? -- For futures, besides CQS, are there any alternative providers (cheaper/better)?

You also have fantastic mountains at your doorsteps. I hate you just a tiny bit :)

Guy makes $160,000 and barely making it month to month...

Wait, what? Let's ignore yours truly and everyone else who works in finance. An average human that makes 150k in base salary would probably be taking home 160-175 total per year. How do you propose that person pay for a 600k house in cash? This, of course, assumes that they are buying said house...

I feel like to live in Manhattan and feel comfortable, you need to make over 500k pre-tax (not spend, but make). If my base was all I was making, I'd make different choices. Actually, I am pretty sure this guy would be making different choices too, since he's probably getting a nice stock award...

Yeah, so door to door we are talking an hour and a half. If you are averaging 11-12 hour workdays, it's pretty detrimental.

Actually, in 2007 we have tried living in the burbs, so I know first hand that this trade off is not worth it. Once you done with it, that hour train ride is in reality an hour and a half. So that's 3 hours out of my day and, since you are commuting with the rest of the crowd, you can't do...

Options strategy to return 6.5% annum with low risk.

Just as a word of warning - this book came up in July 2015 or something like that. The market has not have a meaningful blowup for a while and that's what would hurt you. I'd suggest reading a general options book first, digest the general ideas and only then going down this path.

Right, but to be able to go to top schools you have to be living in the right spot, where property is expensive and real estate taxes are, hmm, meaningful. Nobody is saying that it's poverty, but it's not riches either.

One of the World's Most Successful Hedge Funds is Facing an Employee Rebellion Over Donald Trump

Who said anything about politics? It would be just a team move, happens all the time - if the guy is liked, his minions might follow him wherever he's going to land. PS. Successful stat-arb/HF PMs seem to be in demand, at least in my recent experience.

It's average in Manhattan. For a full service building it's actually relatively low.
