Hmmm...i was viewing it as a diversification of method. The 1:1 trade will probably only break even on it's own, but might just provide the benefit of lower drawdowns when combined.

Valid points, Josh. I'm playing around this idea: suppose you buy 3 contracts of ES, all at the same price. Treat them as three trades. 1 contract you have a 1:1 r/r, the second a 2:1 r/r and the third 3:1 r/r. So basically if the price went to the stop, you would exit all. If however...

TBH, this scaling in/out, shake it all about is something i'm only considering now. There appear to be tradeoffs with everything we do. Nevertheless the FLEXIBILITY to exit partially a position, whether or not you choose to do so, has merit.

    Taking Profits

If you trade multiple contracts, take most off at the profit target and let the others run, with perhaps a trailing stop.

Trade a minimum of 2 contracts. Gives you more flexibility, you can exit one if things are starting to look dicey (when in profit or loss) for example. If you only trade 1 , you don't have this advantage.

Can the financial tax they want to impose kill trading ?

I very much doubt this tax will be implemented. It would end Wall Street and drive all trading to Asia. Even your politicians are not that dumb. Our prime minister has said he would only implement it if the rest of the whole world implements it, knowing full well that is not going to happen.

A FTT type tax was implemented in one of the Nordic countries, I think Sweden. It wiped out their bond trading industry. The volume of futures trading fell by 98% and the options trading market disappeared. They expected 1.5 billion krona in tax, they only raised an average 0f 50 million (:D)...

Need advice on breakout stop placement

If you don't want ANY whipsaws, then simply put the stop at the point where it's a breakout in the opposite direction. So basically, you would be stopped out and reverse. I suspect though the distance would be quite a lot and may not be comfortable for you to trade. The turtles used...
