    off-site research setup?

Let's say it's a 100gb of data. It's not all in DB - some is in text files, PDF, etc.

    Delta Hedge vs Straddle?

Yup, the exposures are identical. For futures, your cash treatment would be the same too. However, for a stock option synthetic straddle vs natural one would get you into a bunch of bizarre and obscure things - funding, short rebates, margin requirements etc.

    off-site research setup?

I have vaugly heard of it, it's that white thing that sometimes blocks the sun, right? :) Seriously, though, I was asking for concrete ideas - which companies offer the features I need ? what sort of costs am I looking at? what are the trade-offs in terms of services? I figured someone which...

R Programming for Traders, Helps small traders compete with Hedge Funds

Simple examples - you want to calculate principal components for a large stock basket and project the current levels. Standard statistical arbitrage thing to do. However, it is literally a two-liner in R, while it would take a fair bit in almost any other language.

    off-site research setup?

I am going to be traveling a fair bit and would like to set up a server that would allow me to do some R&D remotely. Here are my wants for this setup, maybe people could point me in right direction: (1) *UX-based system, with access to shell, python/R/C++. Need to be able to write and test stuff...

    Credit Cards

Actually, some of the higher end cards that do charge a membership fees are very much worth the cost. I get way more out of my platinum Amex then I pay for it (done the calculations, obviously) and little things like ability to donate points directly to charities of my choice are nice as well.

    Paying off mortgage

Not true. In general, seems that in the areas with a stable demand for real estate, like global city centers, you will pay meaningfully more then rent. In areas where real estate is more volatile, you get compensated by positive rental yields. After all said and done, the former is still...

    Carbon Credits

    (a) That sounds outright wacky, so please explain what type of emissions they are "giving off" when they are neither running or charging? (b) If there are indeed emissions that are "given off" during their idle time, how does the amount/impact compare to gasoline-based vehicles?

    Paying off mortgage

Leverage is a separate question. I was just saying that most people think underestimate the total return of real estate (at least most financial literature does). And, considering the low volatility, using leverage makes sense. IMHO.

    Paying off mortgage

Actually, that's not true. When people look at real estate, they should think about the total return. While long term appreciation of a median house has been something like 4.5%, once you include median historical rent it's comparable to SPTR.

How do you approach trading spreads like this?

For flys, do you do them via equal-weighted wings? O your do something more sophisticated to make them neutral to the first and second order moves?

Anyone actually make living from trading?

On a contrary, I am a loser and I am struggling!! I think too many people concentrate on "win or lose" here. In finance, you don't have to be the winner, this not a fucking "Apprentice". You just need to get to some reasonable metrics on your own utility curve. For example, take a guy doing...

    Paying off mortgage

I just wish that I was in either of the two categories :) That is indeed true in the NYC. Even 2008 was a short rest, the prices went down by 10%-15% in good areas. My main reason to buy was silly, I have a dog and at some point we got kicked out of a rental due to it going "no pets". So I...

    Structured Products in Portfolio

So if you can get efficient pricing in these products, you can do things that are pretty nifty. For example, there is no real way you can replicate a double-no-touch or a continuous barrier - while those products give you an ability to sell volatility in a way that controls max loss. Just saying.

What is the optimal position sizing for this long only stock portfolio?

You do get a natural statarb style benefit from re-balancing - you, in general, will be picking up more of cheaper stocks and disposing of rich ones.

    Paying off mortgage

I think you are overreacting and other people are not being civil. Please don't go, we have a deficit of interesting people here.

    Paying off mortgage

Well, for lulz, also known as entertainment. Majority of people would NOT have the problem that the OP has. Majority of people definitely would not have any misgivings about buying real estate for cash like I do. However, saying that carrying any debt is wrong is also a bad advice - there is...

    Paying off mortgage

Wait, if you plan to never take on debt, why do you care about the black mark? :)

    Paying off mortgage

Of course you should. In general, you should use leverage if you have an investment opportunity that has the similar tenor and where risk-adjusted expected return beats the cost of credit.

    Paying off mortgage

First of all, bancruptcy is not as bad as many people think (not that I've been but I have a friend that had to declare PB, worked out OK for him). Also, you can structure your assets in such way that you owe a lot of money but on paper own nothing - if you default, there are no assets to...
