Where did all the inflation bulls go? And those guys posting daily how the dollar will goto zero and how they're long gold miners to protect against the looming fiat currency implosion?

This is the Brummer LYNX fund link at IASG http://www.iasg.com/tabid/56/default.aspx?programid=218 I used to be an investor in the Brummer Helios fund, which gives you exposure to 6 of their funds including LYNX without any additional fees (like a fund of fund).

Ospraie fund down 38% and closing up

I've heard this "HF fees are too high and will come down soon" argument thousands of times, and a thousand times it never materialized. Why is this time different? Because there are 10,000 funds? What if 8,000 close tomorrow. You think the remaining 2,000 will drop their fees now that there's...

Ospraie fund down 38% and closing up

And why didn't lower fees become a standard after the disastrous 1998 year? Why would it be different now? Were shareholders fed up with CEOs all CEOs worldwide after Enron and Worldcom went bust and demanded lower executive compensations? Nothing changed.

Ospraie fund down 38% and closing up

A correlation of zero with a particular underlying market doesn't mean you're shielded from losses. Also, a correlation of zero does not equal negative correlation.

    DAX/BUND/ESTX50 data on IB gone?

Just went into account management. My DTB data connection was UNsubscribed. WTF? I never changed anything, looks like a bug. Resubscribed, data coming in OK again.

    DAX/BUND/ESTX50 data on IB gone?

I don't think today is a holiday in Europe, is it? I don't see any DTB future data in IB today. The "Market Data" tab shows the Euro data connection as "connected".

    ..........Ospraie's blow up...........

I think you see 'reversion to mean' everywhere, not just hedge funds. You see it in sports, CEO/Fortune 500 company performance, national GDP growth % etc.

Ospraie fund down 38% and closing up

IMO hedge funds are no different than brick and mortar companies. Blowups happen all the time, even to the very best. Bear Stearns survived 1929 and the Great Depression, only to blow up in 2008. You can dodge a thousand bullets, only to eventually miss the most obvious one. Do Enron...

Ospraie fund down 38% and closing up

Hmm There are many good funds of hedge funds out there - no matter if the HFRX is investable, it is a good benchmark for FOHF performance. FOFs help you survive catastrophic losses in single hedge funds. If you invest in stocks you also don't just buy just 2 blue chips and pray either won't go...

    Major fund closes...

Hmm seems those numbers at Yahoo are wrong, e.g. XLE closed Dec 31 at 79.35 and closed Sept 2nd at 70.55, approx. -11%. Even if you factor in dividends it doesn't make much difference. Wonder how Yahoo derives its numbers.

Ospraie fund down 38% and closing up

In hindsight, yes. What investment will beat the HFRX index (on a risk adjusted basis) over the next 1, 3, 5 years though?

Ospraie fund down 38% and closing up

This has no implications for the hedge funds industry whatsoever. There's smart people blowing up all the time. 1998, summer 2002, spring 2004, summer/fall 2006, Aug 2007, summer 2008. This time is no different.
