What can go wrong with this trade?

Worst that can happen is a big move in either direction losing the debit cost of the position.

    Pre-earnings straddle/strangle

With stocks like BIDU, pre EA IV usually expands significantly and ATM money straddles don't perform anywhere near as well as you expect due to the double sided IV crush. For example, in February it moved 47 pts and the straddle made less than 10 pts. Apr was a better story since the move was...

I know why most retail investors fail to beat the market

As an investor, one of the hardest things to do is to buy good companies when you feel the worst about them. An extreme example would be DJIA under 7,000 a year+ ago. I'm glad that I'm no longer an investor :D

When is the optimal time to buy back the sold portion of a vertical spread?

The ideal time to close a position is when it has the greatest gain - only newsletters know that (g). The problem is that you only know that in hindsight. So the only thing you can do is draw a line in the sand and run a real or mental trailing stop to protect a gain and that's no guarantee...

what is the best firm for equities and futures?

If you trade clean and don't need a lot of hand holding, IB's low commission schedule is a winner. OTOH, if you need a lot of customer service, you might be better off elsewhere. For me, a big bonus at IB is the ability to scale in and out of positons w/o that pesky flat fee per trade penalty...

    Is this strategy possible?

If you ignore B/A slippage and commissions, assume that all moves happen the day that you execute the position and pretend that a long put or call can have a delta of 1.3 or so, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with that graph! :D
