If you trade more than once a month, do yourself a favor and find a better commission rate. Trading is hard enough to start with - that $10 base fee really adds insult to injury.

Suppose you sell a CC and the stock drops a fair amount. The call expires. Now you can be a buy and hoper, errr holder or you can sell an OTM CC hoping to break even sooner. The lowest OTM call that gets you even could be many months out. Some might sell somethiing a bit lower and closer...

It's a really good strategy when the stock is down no more than the intrinsic value of the call. When it's down a lot more, it's a terrible strategy. :D

I think it depends on the circumstances, eg. how much time remains, how far OTM the short leg is and if you have designs for next month. For example, suppose the UL has risen only modestly and you intend to sell next month at exp. Then, I'd look at covering the short leg for pennies and...

A bit late for this but I think it's a good idea that as the UL moves toward one side, if possible (B/A spread doesn't kill you), the other side should be rolled the amount of the move, bringing in more premium to offset the losing side. If writing IC's is an ongoing thing, you might consider...

Going one step further... Suppose I buy 500 puts at the ASK price. Am I smart money buying bearish puts? Suppose I already owned 5,000 shares of the underlying and was just hedging the lonh position. Doesn't matter if this adds to OI or not. My volume tells you nothing.
