Sounds good to me...he closes his short vol trade by the close...so no exposure to overnight events and hopefully manages his risk in case of anything happening during the day...congrats to him.
You're conveniently forgetting that 'paper' currencies pay interest if held in bank accounts or short term money market instruments which are as good as cash. Granted, the last few years may have not paid much interest. But if you go back to 1971, holding US dollars in say 3 month t bills...

Actually the wise thing would be to put a small percentage of your trading account or assets into going long cryptocurrencies. Goes up another 10x..you make some decent money...goes to zero, small loss.
