Why does Volume matter? Isn't non-involvement from institutional buyers itself a signal?

Or by choosing not to submit orders -- *running*from* the other side of the market. (As when, in a market tumble-down, "can't catch a bid" becomes the term de'jure.) I love when the idiots proclaim one side of the market "took control" -- and drove the market against their own orders... As in...

    Rattlesnake pattern

Boredom?!?! Handle, my friend: With this market, I'm getting my underwear fresh-delivered from Target on a subscription basis. They just bring me a new set and bill my card. (Maybe I should have a talk with NASA, and get hooked up on a catheter/diaper rig, and maybe one of those 360° rotating...

Why does Volume matter? Isn't non-involvement from institutional buyers itself a signal?

Nor should there be, *going*forward* -- it's to *direction* of price that past quantity(s) steer us. All transactions are a nexus of bid price+volume and ask price+volume. There is little in that mix that portends what might happen to transaction numbers should the market price return there...

yahoo SPX volume is just weird

Huh! I haven't done this in a while but, googling "S&P500 volume" produces a boatload of hits. So, aside from "It's an index; doesn't trade."...... the various formulations (additive shares, price-weighted shares, capitalization-weighted shares, whatever) all seem to have adherents. Wish I...

    Is bad algo always bad?

Your question is an excellent one, Harry Squatter, and too often, the lesson (and the answer) are forgotten. The lesson is, "Summary statistics" (even something as basic as "profit/hit percentage" does not tell the whole tale. The answer is, that your misses (so often) tell the more important...

    Premium Sellers Check In

Flat for the day -- I have no idea how. It's been a blur since 7pm last night, but having gone from down $2k last night, to revenue-flat right now...... you have to count that a pretty good day. Risk was supposed to be halved today -- I'm not happy to say that was SO missed -- I had 2630s last...

    are trend lines self-fulfilling prophesies?

Here's your essay test question -- worth 25pts. Imagine you are a director of trade operations for an institution "of size" and in the morning briefing, after the numbers are in, the headlines read, the earnings outted, you get a directive to move the institution's position such that you're...

    Market Basics and Fundamentals

There is this thing out there, called The Interwebs which has this spot called The Youtube which has people like my favorite Uncle Milty: You could do worse than that. But as well, should you wish to go further, there are entire semester classes recorded, from such sterling institutions as...

Self employed day trader in college

A couple of thoughts: 1) File for an extension. Easy to do, costless, *and* will get you past this looming April 15 thing (from which rush, you may feel the need to act hasty, and make a mistake that will cost you. 2) Secure someone *informed* to take a look at your '15, '16, and '17 taxes...

    IB Market Data Subscriptions

I advise great patience and "No Rush" here as the packages and their descriptions are simply awful, in terms of their lack of clarity, lack of mutually-exclusive borders, lack of coverage of (seemingly obvious) redundancy(ies)...... And what you end up with is subscriptions that pluck a couple...

limited company account with Interactive Brokers

Zip. Nada. Zilch. (At least, 'the last time I checked.') Increasingly over the last 2? years, 'margin' has been a rather fluid thing at IB. You can start with exchange minimums, but IB has been working singles and FAs over pretty well. Whether you end up with a U(niversal) or...

Most recommended book on candlestick charts?

You've just done what is needed: you sat and watched. Sit and watch some more. Don't think about names/labels, don't try to carry the contradictory inferences that *will* come from book after book. Think. *Predict*. Test whether prediction after prediction comes to pass as expected, or not...

    Some new thoughts on Tesla...

"Pinto." (Ohmigod -- you just aged the two of us, and anyone else who immediately knew the reference. :D) At any event, "Fair enough!" but that was a known design flaw, buried and ignored. The Tesla fires were/are worth a mention, and even a question, but a *headline*?? And multiple *days* of...

    Some new thoughts on Tesla...

On the fire thing: That's all bullshit anyway. Lithium exposed to air is highly reactive. So is gasoline. But when a car catches on fire due to gasoline, we don't call the design flawed or seek to regulate gas tanks or downgrade the auto industry. No matter Tesla's other issues, the hoo-haw...

Better to be Wide or Deep?

I'd answer Wide Or Deep, except I know that in 6 months or a year, we'll be looking at a different market that will favor the opposite of whatever I record as working best for me now. Keep all your irons hot. Give 'em all a try, regularly. If something doesn't work? Quit it. Go to the ones that...

:D Okay. I spewed. Lunch. Right on the monitor. JEEZ. Cleaning up now. Worth it, though. Still laughing. :)

    Rolling naked put

I always wondered what happened to the Rocky Balboa School Of Trading -- who's motto was "A strong chin will wear out the other guy." If we're collecting the major tenets, it's 1) Time doesn't matter. 2) Rolling doesn't matter. 3) Money doesn't matter. (I'm guessing.)
