Its -8 right now here in pittsburgh

We had 7 this year. They just become part of the family. What is of a little more concern is the diamondback last month sunning himself on my patio, and the tarantula in my bedroom this summer. But then again, nothing sharpens an enjoyment of life like knowing you can be killed on your...

I still don't understand how averaging *up* is profitable

As Susannah just pointed out, it has to be in the context of a strong trend, and you have continued confirmation of the trend. Adding to short term long position at present is just crazy. There are thousands of traders, like myself, ready to pounce on any sign of strength. On the other...

    Seek advice from SUCCESSFUL/PROFITABLE traders

Be prepared to spend as much time educating yourself for trading, as you would with any other profession. A few years, and thousands of hours of screen time should start to get you close, IF you have the discipline and the assets to survive the steep learning curve.

    Daytrading may die this year

Trading should be excellent this year, especially for index futures. Lower, but still decent VIX, and a nice trading range. Just continue to short any show of strength. :p

    Newbie would appreciate some direction

IMO, your time would be better spent in index futures, not Forex. And your programming skills are about 20% of what it will take to be successful. How many mechanics have become world driving champions?

More Risky: Small Business Owner or Trader

There is no easy answer, because it all depends on how the small business was started, and the capital obligations of the business owner. If it was bootstrapped and financed from growth, there is relatively low risk. But if one puts a substantial amount of cash into a startup or purchase...

How to avoid slips on TF

TF has been thinly traded since the move from ER, and that's especially true during this holiday period. That's the most likely cause of your problem. I have a couple systems I like to trade with TF, but they're not tradable with prices jumping 3-4 ticks at a time in low volume...

I could've been a Dentist, a Doctor, a Nurse but no I took wrong path, trading

Well, if your (many!) claims of wealth are true, you certainly highlight the old adage that money doesn't buy taste or good sense.

LOL. Nothing says you don't care like your nearly 9,000 posts.

If you're young, pay attention to Madoff.

This post, and others of yours that I've stumbled on, tell me that you are either (A) Young, (B) Ignorant, or (C) Both. I'm guessing (C). If you had either any maturity or any smarts you'd know that money like this does not buy happiness, and it won't improve your life if you have a rotten...

    AIG - the long term

IMHO (I own AIG at 2.5), I don't see more downside, so your losses have already been taken. The Feds own the majority of AIG at present, and there are efforts to sell off assets and hopefully get the gov't out of the picture. Those plans are being delayed by the overall economic picture. My...

    $500/day

Stretching for a daily goal is not a good thing to do. When the market isn't supportive of your strategy and strengths, trying to hit a goal leads to revenge trading and stupid errors. It's like filing a flight plan then ignoring the storms that roll into your path. The smart pilot knows...

Madoff says losses of 50 Billion!

Unfortunately you are probably right. This past year has made me feel justified in my decision over the past couple decades to never trust anyone with a penny of my money. We're all witness to the dark side of capitalism. Unbridled greed. And all of this is simply going to lead to...

    What is a trader?

We do create value. As was pointed out...and I think this is the best answer...we provide capital at risk in order to create a market. The value derives from the market, of which we are all participants and contributors.

    What is a trader?

This was shared with me by a friend, and I pass it along. What is a Trader? Traders take chances. Like everybody else, they fear failing. But they refuse to let fear control them. Traders don't give up. When things get tough, they hang in until the going gets better. Traders are...

Index for pre and after hours??

Your question still doesn't make much sense. If you are trading the ES, then simply chart it on its 24 hour schedule and reference the timeframe you want, as it represents the S&P. Or, use the YM if you want to reference the Dow before and after 'regular' market hours.
