    Help with IRA investing

Do NOT put your money into a fund. Expenses are a ripoff and completely unnecessary with the great number of other alternatives. My advice is to build a watch list of very high quality, high yielding stocks, AND WAIT for pullbacks. Be sure to set up your IRA for dividend reinvestment when...

Please help me to select a stock for daytrading

+1 If you don't have a well-defined strategy in place, then switching to a different instrument isn't likely to improve your profits. Flying by the seat of your pants may work after you've spent 10 years in the game, but not at this stage in your career.

Zimmerman charged with 2nd degree murder

So sad...but so true. There isn't a broadcast, cable, or internet news source in the U.S. that can any longer be trusted. And print is moving in the same direction. Because of the splintering of the news audience across a variety of media, their budgets have all been slashed, and they now...

Thinking of throwing in the towel

I don't know your age. But long term the best bet you can make is on high-cap stocks paying good, and regular, dividends. IMO, there is no reason to be in ETFs that pay no yield, when a portfolio of good dividend paying diversified equities regularly outperforms the S&P long-term.

Botched 1099-B cost-basis reporting: The List

Thanks JackR. But you lost me on that last line of calculation, where you have +/- before Column G (adjustments). Assuming G is a positive number, is G added or subtracted from the total of Sale-Cost?

Botched 1099-B cost-basis reporting: The List

I'm looking at an 8949 from IB. I'm confused about the general issue of how the "(G) Adjustments to gain or loss, if any", should impact the overall calculation of gains when including Sales Price and Cost or other Basis. Simple example: (e) Sales Price is 500,000 (f) Cost is...

Time to bring back the draft/ 2 year rotations?

Obviously you were not around for Vietnam. The draft gave politicians pretty of canon fodder to throw into the jungles, and nobody game a damn until over 50 thousand were dead.

The bizarre calculus of emergency room charges

It isn't hard at all. Last year I spent ONE night laying in a hallway in an observation wing after I went in for some dizziness. BIG MISTAKE. Ended up with a perfect health report after a dozen tests that I didn't order, and half of which were not necessary, and a bill for $12 THOUSAND...

Trayvon Martin Video Shows No Blood or Bruises on George Zimmerman

Trayvon was a punk. Zimmerman is a punk. They got into each other's faces. And Florida law permits anyone to stand their ground and defend with deadly force. This happens every day. But this particular day was a very slow news day, and this particular family is a very verbal...

    Am I overlooking the risk?

I want to add here...as one who nearly lost his entire net worth selling puts in 2000...that one should never short puts that can generate a margin call or put you in serious jeopardy in a worst-case-scenario. The strategy can have some value in specific cases that the trader has clearly...

    Cnbc Scam!!

LOL. Damn good idea. Wish I'd thought of it. Or, if someone has the coding talent, they can hack into the CNBC studio teleprompter and read the copy before the announcer. Or, better yet, insert their own copy into the teleprompter before it gets to the announcer. Imagine the...

    Anatomy of the ideal pullback

Assuming that one is trading stocks: 1. What happened with the stock yesterday? 2. What happened at today's open? (Think about why that might be important. If traders sold off a stock at the open, do you really want to play for an intraday low expecting a rally?) 3. What is happening...

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

Certainly the low VIX and rise in markets hasn't hurt, as well as the big cuts in financial center employment. The "Financial Industry" that an FTT is designed to target isn't the same industry that it was in 2008. By now the bad players have all gone sailing. Literally.

Yes, I had to laugh at the tag line. Just hope they aren't painting a target on their back for hackers looking for something to take aim at.

    Automated Trading

The strategy handed out in a public meeting showed ONLY gains and no losses over hundreds of trades (with the actual 'trades' themselves listed), and promoted an overall gain of 48%. That is the headline on the front page, with no mention of losing trades still running. It was not UNTIL I...

    Automated Trading
