    Encryption

Yup, maintaining a disk image of a "pristine" install plus updates is a good idea. You always have a way of getting back to a safe, recent starting point without the drudgery of a manual re-install. And I thought I was the only anal-retentive geek in the universe who did this! Good to see...

    Webcam Surveillance Software

It turns out the software that came with the Logitech Quickcam I use has this feature. It'll record a video clip as long as there is motion detected. It looks like there are other webcam surveillance products available, but they're not free.

    Webcam Surveillance Software

Hmmm. I think you're right. I remember messing with something that capped a video clip when motion was detected but it was a while back. I'll see if I can dig it up again.

    Webcam Surveillance Software

Do you want to remotely monitor a camera over the internet, or record time-stamped pics based on motion detection and review them later? Heck, I may as well just cover both. For remote video surveillance, I use webcam2000. It's free and gets the job done with no fuss. At work or...

Oral Testimony for Confiscation of 401(k)'s...

I just read the whole pdf file. Nowhere did it say that the contents of existing 401Ks or IRAs would be confiscated. It did not say it explicitly or even hint at it. (In case I missed it please copy/paste the section from the pdf where it say anything about confiscating money.) What it...

    Information Overload

Price, volume, support/resistance and trend lines. I look at earnings.com and yahoo finance for earnings news for my options trading and forexfactory for my forex trading. That's it. Turn off the boob tube, it's pure drivel. I don't understand these guys here who watch CNBC all day while...

    Encryption

Here's some food for thought regarding viruses. I don't use anti-virus software at all! I know that sounds crazy, but there are only very limited ways for viruses to enter your computer. If you avoid these unsafe practices, you'll never get a virus. The list of biggies: 1) E-mail...

    Encryption

I use truecrypt and it rules the roost for encryption, especially whole-disk. It's free, open-source and keeps improving over time. The concerns you named (anti-virus, firewall) are completely unrelated to encryption. You'd use truecrypt to protect sensitive data and that's all. It's to...

    Confiscation of retirement.

God, you're right. Like everyone else in this thread, I didn't bother looking around beyond the linked "newspaper" article from the OP. The Carolina Journal is nothing more than a white-washed, legit-appearing outlet for the John Locke Foundation. It's pure BS. I need to be more diligent...

    Confiscation of retirement.

Nationalizing pension funds is totally different from confiscating 401Ks.

    Confiscation of retirement.

Except for me. I'm in cash right now and have been doing very well, thank you very much.

Do you own gold as a hedge against economic disaster?

Yeah, baby! The holy trinity of survivalism: alcohol, tobacco and firearms.

Do you own gold as a hedge against economic disaster?

    No, only brass and lead.

    Confiscation of retirement.

It'll be like the scene in "Mars Attacks" where the Martians blow up Congress. Hehe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE7IfBgTT1I

    Confiscation of retirement.

Of course not. The only people suggesting this are academics as far as I can tell. If anyone in Congress suggested this, they'd be in political hot water. Still, it's great fun talking about it.

will Obama tap dance his way out -crisis

If you're on the "receiving end" of what you're alluding to, I don't think you traditionally have much choice about lube/no-lube.

will Obama tap dance his way out -crisis

I agree with 'hood. I didn't fully agree with either candidate, but hey, the guy got elected so let's see what happens. I'd say the same if McCain had been elected. I have contingency plans in place to protect myself financially. But I would like to stay here in my home country and...

    Confiscation of retirement.

It might, but there's nothing like a little TA to fix that problem.

    Confiscation of retirement.

No need to cash 'em in and take the penalty. Just go long ES in the IRA and short ES in your cash account. You'll pump money out of your IRA penalty-free and get favorable tax treatment to boot (60/40 long term/short term cap gain)!
