US real estate market is alive and well

Finally news to support Cramer's bottom call on real estate that he made 3 years ago!

    IB data halt?

IB appears to be having a new type of problem this morning that I've never seen before. Stocks that aren't halted are considered halted by IB. Apparently they are working on the issue.

Alan Farley in Dallas at AfTA on 4/19/11

Just my opinion, but he could potentially be the worst writer in the history of the English language.

    SEC looking at new regulations

I second that. Ever since I have been trading (since the 1990s), the SEC has done nothing to protect the individual investor. In fact, it has consistently made it harder to trade with its decisions. Maybe at one point it was a worthy organization but now it generally does the opposite of what it...

    Ercot Blowout Day

Noob question regarding electricity trading: can you trade electricity contracts via IB. If so, what's the symbol. If not, how and where do you trade them?

Moody's Signals Risk of Negative Outlook for U.S. Rating

The real question is who the hell cares about Moodys. They have proven to be an ineffective organization.

Portable high speed internet for trading

Is there a 4G mobile plan that offers unlimited bandwidth yet? The "overage" charges are completely ridiculous on these plans, especially Verizon. Right now I use Virgin Mobile's Beyond Talk plan for 3g, $25/month, unlimited data. But 3g speeds are too slow for my trading apps.

Why is low housing prices a problem?

Low housing prices would reward prudent savers and that goes against current USA policy. Consider the fact that banks and the Fed still have billions of exposure to the real estate market and you know the real reason there is a concerted effort to keep real estate prices high.

A couple of thoughts regarding Interactive Brokers

I would guess this is due to the fact IB uses snapshot data instead of tick data. But this also makes IBs data almost never lag in fast markets, which in my mind is a good decision.

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

Speak for yourself. This was a continual refrain coming from CNBC talking heads back in the day that somehow we were all culpable. Most likely that was the company line because GE was imploding at the time because of their idiotic financial arm. Most of these financial companies should have...

    IB OPG orders

I hadn't thought of that - it is a good point. IB needs to reconsider this flawed decision. Perhaps IB could invest in the infrastructure needed to support immediate OPG cancellations. Or maybe send out cancellations of OPG orders on a lower priority basis. 5 minute delays are pretty much...

    IB OPG orders

Right now you would have to subscribe for ticker updates for that symbol using the NYSE exchange, not SMART. When you get the first quote from the ticker update, you would know the stock was open for trading at the NYSE and you could cancel the OPG order programmatically, then submit your next...

Yes from my recent experiences, confirmed multiple times.

    IB OPG orders

After thinking about this further, it seems like a poor decision by IB. If I have an automated trading system that uses OPG limit orders it would be nice to know immediately if an order was cancelled or not at the open. Delaying that information can only hinder the performance of systems that...

IB Clients, do you use your security device to log-in?

Your suggestion completely misses the point of the security devices. Hopefully, if your account gets hacked, you won't be able to get reimbursed due to negligence.

IB Clients, do you use your security device to log-in?

So basically you are saying "Make it really easy for a hacker to break into your account by first just using a code card and second keeping hackable digital copies around. Then you don't get any of the security protection while making sure IB gets all of the liability!" Sounds pretty slimy to me.

    IB OPG orders

Ok, but an unintended consequence for me is that I relied on the cancelling of the OPG to signal that a stock had begun trading on the NYSE. Now I have to bring up a NYSE-specific ticker in order to see if there are NYSE bids and offers to make that determination.

    IB OPG orders

I have used OPG limit orders on NYSE stocks for many years through IB. Here is how OPG limit orders have worked in the past: 1. I submit my OPG limit orders at 9:20am. 2. When the stock opens, I either get filled or the order is cancelled. Lately, I have been seeing this: 1. I submit...
