    Deductible moving expenses?

But if you are moving your business, surely that is tax deductible. :D Seriously though, I suspect this one ain't gonna fly. For whatever reason, seems like the IRS views small business deductions as 99.999% fraudulent with a tiny amount of proper deductions. But, I am far from a tax...

    easylanguage question

Use the BarsSinceEntry global var (or is it a function? Don't recall). For example, if your reverse failure area was 20 bars long: ReverseFailurePoint=lowest(low,(20+BarsSinceEntry)); Or, if you are willing to accept a lower low since you entered the trade, but want to get the lowest low...

    Zero Sum Game???

It'd be interesting to know just how many farmers (or other "real" users of the commodities) actually hedge. I know somebody who once tried to find out. Chicago didn't seem to have any records like that (that he could find), nor did anybody seem to know of any "bona-fide" hedgers. His...

    95% of traders fail???

It's not really a bad stat, comparatively. I forget the numbers, but it was something like 50% of new businesses fail in the first year, and 90% in 5 years. Why should trading be any different? Don't kid yourself, it ain't easy. Neither is starting a donut shop or a pizza place. But it...

    Soros

And therein lies the problem that most folks (particularly liberals - never really figured out why) do not understand. Freedom does not equal majority rule! To paraphrase (or hopefully quote) P.J. O'Rourke "If majority ruled, we'd eat pizza for dinner every night. And (since the majority are...

    Living Room Economist

They've been trying that ever since they first thought up a European currency (and some of us suspect that is half the reason they came up with the Euro in the first place). So far, it's not working - folks would rather have US dollars than currency at the command of a committee of socialists...

    Brokerage ID theft scam

From the article: "Experience tells us that most investors who lose money never follow up with a regulatory authority." I'm thinkin' that those investors deserve at least some of the blame, since they never turn the bad guys in.

Hypothetical scenario - how much would you risk?

Crude experimentation with Excel suggests ~50% is optimum. I'd be more inclined to start with considerably less, and maybe grow to a max of 25%.

    Trade War brewing? :-O

You know what drives me nuts about all this? Two things, first we have a President that is supposedly pro-taxcuts, but tariffs are essentially a tax on all consumers. Secondly, the US Brassiere production is pretty much zilch. The administration is taxing bras for no apparent reason (as far...

Trendiness of Days - assigning a value

Yeah, it's kinda that. Take today as an example of what I would call a Range Day. Market set it's high and low for the day early on, and respected that for the rest of the day - that's a Range Day, and should score very low on our Trendiness Scale. We've all seen days where the market just...

Trendiness of Days - assigning a value

That's an interesting idea, and a new one to me (unschooled in stats as I am). But let's take the day I posted this. We had a nice uptrend until 1 or so (as I recall), then a downtrend for the rest of the day. Would a least squares take that as a range day? I mean, compare that to today (a...

Trendiness of Days - assigning a value

How would one go about assigning a value to how "trendy" a day was? Take today for instance, I'd rate it fairly high as a trend day - we basically had one trend up for most of the day, then a trend down. Some days we trend all day, those would get the higher score. Most days (lately) the...

How much should a "good" trader earn?

You missed the point (that's OK, I try to hard not to "overstate" my points, so I tend to understate them). Yes, we are taking about a business, owned by the trader. Yes, we are deducting expenses. Yes we are talking fundamental accounting. However, one also needs to include a wage for the...

    IB delays 11/14/2003

Man, IB has frequently been a second behind TradeStation over the past month for me. Today, it was even worse, sometimes 2 seconds or more. Dunno the skinny, but with TS dropping commish like they did, IB needs to be on time with data. IMO, drop any bells and whistles, give us fast data.

How much should a "good" trader earn?

But you forget to pay your employee (you). A common mistake. If you wish to compare trading to a "regular" business, don't forget to include a wage for the head trader/CEO.
