    I was thinking more of structure of a client's portfolio and communication of the structure to the client. For example: 10% commodities, 30% bonds, 10% managed futures, ... Investors should be explained that when 1 asset class perform worse the others performs better etc. Surprisingly not a...

    Since I'm currently advising + in talks about managing money, i'll throw in my 2 cents. Work with some good banks/ brokers/ money raising firms. And more importantly; don't let individuals invest more than 5% of their liquid net worth in your fund.

    why people hedge?

    You are short a portfolio of 100 small and midcap stocks. Every 1% the S&P goes up, your portfolio loses 0.5%. You see why it would make sense to hedge with/ be long SPY or ES. This makes even more sense if every 1% the S&P goes down your portfolio goes up 1.5%
