Cliff Asness Knows Less than He Thought

So I was just thinking about this. I always had the impression that, over the long haul, NASDAQ outperformed the S&P, which outperformed the DOW. Not hugely, but somewhat. And I always thought this was tied to size - NASDAQ had smaller companies on average than the S&P which has smaller...

Gotta love ZERO RISK in the SP500 = $$$

Wait, someone warned? Stocks seem to be down pretty big (well, big relative to their normally being up lol) after-hours.

First AI ETF is out, would you buy at all?

On a quick look it seems to be doing pretty good, no? Beating SPY and DIA by a pretty fair amount, losing to QQQ a bit more narrowly. There are a lot worse ETFs out there lol.

So if I short an ETN...

Baahahaha, I listened to a few of his podcasts. I know he shorts them a lot, but in these podcasts he was talking about going long in various penny stocks and how so many of his listeners have made millions, etc. buying and selling these penny stocks. In the middle of all this, he explicitly...

So if I short an ETN...

Thanks Sig, good to know. Funny you mention IB, that is exactly who I use. :) I think I'm going to put in a call to them to see exactly how they would handle the margin requirements in this case. But good to know essentially I can't likely get "short squeezed" in an ETN issuer bankruptcy...

An insight to John "Rambo" Moulton trading

Sounds like the typical person they have on Chat With Traders, other podcasts as well. All fluff, no substance, just like you described somi. I listened to hundreds of different episodes before figuring this out. The only way I would change my mind about this guy if neither he nor any of...

So if I short an ETN...

Thanks so much Sig. So let's say there is an ETN that has a "value" of $100 on day 1 - that is, ignoring the issuer credit risk, if the ETN was liquidated the issuer would owe $100 on it. I short it. On day 2, the stock markets world wide collapse. The ETNs "value" drops to $70 at the close...

Are options in TVIX, UVXY, VXX, SVXY, cash settled or in-kind settled?

Haha, thanks Tommy. I think. :) Everything I've read would seem to indicate they are american style, and settled by delivery, just frustrating not being able to find the actual white sheet or prospectus talking about them. Still looking, I am not abandoning the ship!!! :)

Are options in TVIX, UVXY, VXX, SVXY, cash settled or in-kind settled?

This is seeming to be a bit harder to figure out than I thought it would. Let's say I sell a put on TVIX. If the holder exercises it, do I actually get assigned the TVIX? Or is just cash settled? I know for VIX they have to be just cash settled since there no underlying physical VIX. But...

Why hedge, why not just buy a smaller position?

Huh? I would think most use hedging not because they can't take a loss, its because they don't want to take the GAIN, and the tax that goes along with it. I'm in that boat - I would reduce certain positions today if I didn't have to recognize huge built in gains. But I don't want to. Hence...

So if I short an ETN...

Thanks quant1. I'm thinking about a scenario where the company that issued the ETN runs out of money to fund the redemption. I read that Lehman did that when it went bust in 2008 I believe - like the holders of 3 ETNs I believe ended up seeing pennies on the dollar with respect to their...
