    long of gold in euros

So if someone says to you, "The dollar is about to collapse - buy gold!" Explain to them (especially if they are a retiree) that they are already short the dollar, so they have nothing to worry about. Using dollar to buy gold simply makes them doubly short the dollar, which is far more risky...

    long of gold in euros

There is a guy on tv who says he is "long of gold in euros." I think he's talking about two positions; Long gold Long Euro So he started out: 1 dollar 0 euro 0 gold and then: 1 euro/dollar 1 gold But what's also missing from this picture? His liabilites, which are...

Internet-trained Apple analyst lost tens of millions of other peoples' money

Why would he be in a bull call spread? Using calls as leverage and limiting the upside. This is a classic Dykstra strategy.

    What changed in 1980

The alternative to saving is consumption. So the real question is, why consumption over saving in 1980? Part of the answer is demographic, in 1980 the boomers were forming households. If you figure the average boomer was born in 1954, then he and she would be 26 in 1980 and forming households...

    What changed in 1980

It's Japan's fault. The strong dollar in the early 1980s made consuming now more appealing than saving for later, and that explains the twin deficits, ie the trade and budget deficits. Essentially Japanese (and later Chinese) savers preferred to subsidize US consumption (via trade deficit) and...

    Elite posting rate plunges

The trouble is that people lost money in the crash, got out or sold on the way up and now they can't bear to look at the new highs. Same reason CNBC ratings are in the dumps. It is called "Elite Trader" but most of the "traders" are operating $1000 forex accounts.

One thing that can be useful to watch to gauge longer term trend is Monday opens. If Monday opens lower than the previous close, then retail buying is subdued or even negative. You can see from the November lows that 9 of the 13 weeks had lower Monday opens, even though the SPY travelled about...

ART bought out at $2.75. So it was good to $2.75, not $3. This is a good example of the difficulty of knowing when to sell. I sold 10% of my position on Tuesday and then the whole move was wiped out before today's buyout.
