    The Surf Report

And so the countdown starts once more: 13 12 11 10 In retrospect, the latest 3 week move up has been a giant head-fake. When you review the chart of the Nikkei in the 90's, it was extremely volatile when it was topping. And so is the Dow. Break of 12.5k support will be a huge technical...

    Number of contracts per $$

Exactly. Anything else is just a real rough guideline. I've heard of the number $7500 per contract for NQ, ES, YM. But with good risk management and tight stops, I believe the number can be reduced to about $4k or $5k. If scalping, even lower. Trading track record, or if system trading, max...

    Serious IB programming glitch

I think the implementation is so bad, they should just fix it without a vote. This is just another example of lack of beta testing of new features. IB just won't do it.....or their beta testers are not really doing the job. The fix is simple: (2 ways to handle) 1) configuration option o...

Why are people on ET so against a decent minimum wage

Exactly. Let the MARKET set the minimum wage. I would take a gander that it is much lower in this job market than most people would realize. Laws and regulation mess with the natural free market. In the long run, this is not good.

Beware !! Big Reds are awaiting!!

OF COURSE, Hillary appears to be in charge. She's SO CONFIDENT in all of her ideas. Yep, the market will say: "we're saved by HILLARY...hooray !". Whew, once the REALITY sets in....it's gonna be ugly in the equity markets.

How do you know when to stop trading for the day??

Good stuff....and this has been demonstrated on the Trader P&L 2007 forum....with one trader doing about +$30k for several months, and then completely blowing up with a $-100k month. I think the profile of your trading is important to evaluate: % wins/losses; avg $ win/loss and % of large...

    Aggressive Systems Trading Drawdowns

Better. But....your largest losing day has not been surpassed by your largest (which is recent) winning day. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes you to get back to break-even.

How do you know when to stop trading for the day??

Yes, your trading plan should have the circuit breakers specified - both downside and upside. Usually the upside breaker is something like: Up $1000+ for the day, quit after 30% give-back ($-300+ in this case). So quit at $700 if you were up $1000 and gave back $300. Quit at $+1400 if you...

    Importing IB positions to Excel

Which version exactly ? 878, 879 ?? Seems strange....because the API only changed in the beta release (9.4) and TWS releases shouldn't been affected.

Could a prop firm (day trading) ruin your trading?

"Pressure to Trade" is a huge problem going Prop. It's especially bad when markets are not moving much....ala 2004 -> 2006. You've got to be good right out of the blocks or you'll blow-up very fast.

Good at ES but bad at daytrading stocks. I feel the ES is better.

A couple of comments (having traded both): 1) You can reduce the liquidity problems with stocks by setting a cut-off of $2 million shares per day traded on average. Of course, this cut-off prevents you from trading stocks that can really move in one day. 2) The stock "too much variety" problem...

    The Surf Report

Wow - ever so true. I was ASTOUNDED to discover recently that institutional rates for stocks are below $1 per thousand. The average prop is charging $4 to $8....a pretty nifty mark-up that, over time, would kill the profitability of all but the best day traders.

Random Walk Theory Proved, once and for all.

Amen. It comes down to sound RISK MANAGEMENT....and it SOUNDS simple, like use a small STOP LOSS, but guess what ? The market will CUT YOU TO PIECES...."death by a thousand cuts". So it's much, MUCH more complicated than THAT.

    Vista or XP?

BOTH Win/XP and Vista are horrible for trading workstations. To prove it, one trader took his working Tradestation platform (and it can really consume CPUs), and ported it to the fastest machine he could purchase using WinXP/Pro. His older machine was running Windows 2000. NOTE: He could never...

    Laser vs Sterling Trader Pro

Wow - hard to believe it's that bad. I only reviewed the docs and they were much better than IB's. It appears as though almost all of these API's suffer in one form (design, implementation) or another(tech support, documentation). We're still in the Wild, wild west days of programmable trading...
