    Question about hedging a portfolio

How about this. Today we are at SPX 1130. Let's say you are long. Sell the Feb 1150C for $6 and buy the Feb 1100P for $6. It's a free trade at that point, but not as the market moves. Up to 1150, you make a good bit on your ES, lose the P $$$ and are on the hook for the 1150C, which...

VIX Futures set to roll 3/26

The margin required will be key. I think liquidity will be very good. I know a lot of people who have been waiting for this and I'd be very surprised if it isn't pretty liquid.

VIX Futures set to roll 3/26

Personally, I'm a bit disappointed by the $100 per point size. $500 would have been better. No word on margins yet, but I certainly hope it's low for $100 per point. I also read that the "reportable position" is set at 25 contracts. I see that getting raised, else we will have a LOT of...

FTSE EuroFirst 80/100 approved for U.S. Sale

Nothing official of course but from what I've heard... Eurex is ready to go the week after gaining approval. They certainly hope that will be "any time now". There is some pressure on the CFTC to move quickly as some firms have allegedly expressed an interest in using Eurex for the June...

FTSE EuroFirst 80/100 approved for U.S. Sale

I think Euro Stoxx is 50 companies. The 80/100 are the largest and most liquid. They all seem to track each other rather closely. Odd thing is... the FTSEEurofirst.com page keeps shutting down IE when running on my computer. I cannot actually load the page and view the website. I've never...

FTSE EuroFirst 80/100 approved for U.S. Sale

Add another no-action letter from the CFTC. These are pretty good indexes for those of you seeking exposure across the pond. http://www.forbes.com/markets/newswire/2004/01/28/rtr1232659.html

Looking for fairly "liquid" index options

I think you guys are talking about two different SPX contracts. SPX equity index options trade for $100 times the quoted price and thus move at $100 per point (at a delta of 1). SPX futures options trade for $250 times the quoted price and move a proportionate amount. Since ES is $50 per...

    - Question about Volatility when selling premium?

Saturnine, Wow. Not sure where to start with that post. I don't disagree with any of it and really only have one question. Why bother? Are you looking for liquidity? As a fellow professional options seller, I need people to be buying - closing that spread and buying what I am...

VIX Futures set to roll 3/26

CFE is set to go. Highlights from the link below of the new futures contract: "VIX futures will trade from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. (CST) under the ticker symbol VX. The underlying value for VIX futures will be ten times the index value and will be disseminated by CFE under the symbol "VXB."...

Looking for fairly "liquid" index options

In that case, you want a futures option. The margin required is about 1/3 the amount required for the same index option, and the prices move in unison with index options. Liquidity is very poor, but if you want to hedge ES, this is the tool. I believe that since there are already two sets...

Questions about ISE and Interactive Brokers (IB)

Two to Three seconds is for LIMIT orders where I am selling at the bid, etc... Market orders were a hair faster last time I did one, but it's been a while. I don't need to risk a bad fill, so I rarely do market orders. I route through SMART with IB, some fills are ISE, others are not. I...

Questions about ISE and Interactive Brokers (IB)

Assuming the order is marketable, that is, you are hitting an existing limit order already out there, it's fast. I would say within about 2 - 3 seconds but I have never timed it precisely. I run dialup sometimes and it's about the same. I'm not sure how it could be much faster. If it was...

    Trading for pros only

NYSE, What waggie said is true...and... My understanding is that if you are dealing with clients, then you would need the appropriate licenses. Since that is not the case, you may still be subject to significant disclosure requirements and some registrations. A fund of funds (on the NFA...

    Monthly Volume

I would suggest narrowing the criteria a bit. The answer will depend on how much $$$ the trader has. Answers could range from a few hundred to many thousands. Maybe a figure like round trips or number of trades might be more meaningful and useful for comparison purposes??? Just a suggestion.

    IB Account Statements

Settled Cash is that which can be taken out. For example... Equity trades may take 3 days to clear etc... So if you close an equity position yesterday, your "cash" will reflect it immediately, but not your settled cash - until the third day.

    New and Improved Qcharts

They would not send that email to current users. We know better. They just keep selling and selling. The servers are still unreliable and the options data is not useful as most of the trades are missing. Thankfully, I don't do much equity trading these days. If I did, I would not be able...

    SPX 1170 Feb call

I'm no specialist but will add these two things. The delta/theta were slightly different six points prior. More importantly, volatility (VIX) dropped nearly a full point Friday. This will impact index options the most on a short term basis.

    Safe Strategy?

It sounds like you are effectively talking about covered calls to the downside, using the long dated leap as a proxy for a short position. Your biggest problem (IMO) is the underlying index moving far away from your initial leap strike fairly quickly. If the index stays in the neighborhood...
