[Buying a NEW laptop] May I use Linux for trading?

The ThinkOrSwim platform flat out refuses to run on a non-Oracle JVM. IB may or may not run on non-Oracle but Oracle has made it very easy to install on Linux. It used to be a religious experience.

What do you think of this deal.

Your nephew's got the right idea but is being overly ambitious. Best way to start if you're young is buy a *cheap* townhouse and fix it up yourself (if needed). Another option is a duplex where you live in one half and rent the other. I've had a heck of a time finding duplexes because they're...

DUST: quotes (Bid/Ask) doesn't make sense...

The option chain on IB only has strikes down to 5. Not sure where those lower strikes are from. I checked the CBOE chain and it looks very much like what you posted. Weird.

BitCoin Use Safety, Very Basic Question.

Bitcoin exchanges are held to the "know your customer" standard in order to allow customers to convert to USD. That means they're watching for red flags same as banks. Something else to consider is how much cashflow we're talking about. Bitcoin exchanges don't necessarily have that much USD on...

BitCoin Use Safety, Very Basic Question.

Regular transfers from a BTC exchange to and from a US bank will begin to look like money laundering after a while. If everything is truly aboveboard, why not just do normal USD wire transfers?

[Buying a NEW laptop] May I use Linux for trading?

IB's TWS and Gateway and Think or Swim are both Java-based, therefore both work on Windows, Linux and Mac.

    IB accounts for active trading

If it's an IRA I don't think you can use PM.

[Buying a NEW laptop] May I use Linux for trading?

You can pretty much buy any random recent laptop and Linux will run on it. I run IB TWS and my own custom front-end software on both Linux and Windows with no problems. One of the saddest things is you can't buy an empty laptop (no OS) at least here in the US. You have to pay for MS Windows...

    Anyone used Raspberry for trading?

You're not planning on running IB TWS or IB Gateway on there right? Processors in this class do not have enough RAM or CPU horsepower to to run Java apps.

Is selling options before earning Good Strategy?

Pwned. Fortunately I don't trade such dreadful strategies any more.

Is selling options before earning Good Strategy?

I once traded a long straddle on a stock that everyone thought would move maybe 5% after earnings. It ended up making a 20% move where I made a lot of money unexpectedly. Now imagine the guy who took the other side of my trade. That's you.

Huge Delta/Risk discrepancy between IB and ToS

Some call it the "BS" model too.:D

Huge Delta/Risk discrepancy between IB and ToS

Be careful changing which model you're using. Futures options (at least ES) are American settled and by definition you should be using Bjerksund-Stensland. Index options are European settled and by definition you should be using Black-Scholes. This discrepancy could be something as simple as...

This bitcoin challenger is up 1,100% this year — but is it ready for prime time?

Got that right. Back in the day I (and lots of others) ran a full BTC node when the blockchain was 1 or 2 GB. Now it's 68 GB and the number of full nodes is much smaller. Everyone's pretty much switched over to using thin clients like Electrum. This doesn't bode well for the health of the...

This bitcoin challenger is up 1,100% this year — but is it ready for prime time?

Ethereum vs Bitcoin isn't quite an apples-to-apples comparison. Ethereum is truly a step beyond the simple ledger blockchain, implementing smart contracts. Smart contracts are a truly brilliant breakthrough.

Interactive Brokers returns multiple “presubmitted” order statuses for a single order

I've seen this too. In my trading app the submitted and presubmitted messages are only used to update the GUI. Because of this the order will appear on the screen on the first message and be updated a few times with the repeats. It's obnoxious from a code perspective but is invisible on the...
