    tax sheltering strategies

You may well be better of just filing as a trader in securities, unless there is some specific reason you need a corp. Big reason why? You pay no self employment tax, which is a large savings. And you can still deduct health insurance, offfice, hardware, software, publications, data fees...

POLL: What was your best trade ever?

I was on vacation in Hawaii a few years ago and took my laptop along. I hadn't planned to trade...but...TYCO was just dropping hard and it was 5 mins before the market close. At that point in time I never shorted or traded on gut instinct. But a voice inside of me just said 'go for it'...

Honestly, can you daytraders make money on choppy days like today?

Definitely. Wonderful shorts this morning. Gotta love the earnings season.

    Going Full-time, please advise

Well said. Setting targets will put a trader - especially a new trader - into an area that's ripe for emotional attachment to every trade, and every day. And that's death. The objectives that should be set are very general in terms of equity growth over time. Very simply, if your equity...

$52k gone from my IB account. What next, sue IB?

There isn't a communications provider or broker in existence that will guarantee 100% uptime. Even Ma Bell won't promise anything beyond 99.999 for a landline call. Toss in internet routers, PC systems, market volatility, wireless, etc. etc., and you are looking at far less reliability when...

$52k gone from my IB account. What next, sue IB?

It sounds like the kind of excuse I might run by my wife if I was to take a loss and needed a good excuse for my failure. But I sure wouldn't expect my broker to buy it.

$52k gone from my IB account. What next, sue IB?

I've been running many complex equity orders through TWS every day for a year. I have yet to experience a single glitch or a second of downtime. Anyone who would put themselves in a position of walking away from a system configuration that could put them 50K in the hole without monitoring...

    Automated Trading

I trade a few systems that at first glance are perfect for automation. But my efforts so far have been frustrating because of data spikes, system glitches, etc. At some point data and systems may be perfectly reliable. But we aren't there yet (may never be), and I need to be involved...

    Holy Grail Investment Plan

That's a very good plan, and 35 years from now you'll be happy you stuck to it. Unfortunately, human nature being what it is, you probably won't.

Daytrading or Swing Trading or just trading

The very concept of "potential" in trading is meaningless as regards the value of a trading style or strategy. In any strategy, your "potential" for gains is unlimited. As is your "potential" for massive losses. If you are trolling for ideas on what you should be pursuing, the most...

    Novel Option strategy!

IMHO, you shouldn't lock yourself into an options broker. Interactive Brokers has a platform I have come to like for many reasons, not the least of which is the ability to quickly trade multiple markets/instruments with good cost structure.

Newbie looking for some friendly advice, please!!

The odds of you making consistent profits - or any profits for that matter - as a retail short term trader in Forex are between none and less than none. With less than none being the more likely. Either move to a much longer timeframe or a different market.

    Novel Option strategy!

In reading your post I am reminded of the options broker who once told me that the worst thing that can happen to a new options trader is to have big gains on his initial trades. The tendancy is then to assume that it's easy, and to start ignoring the risks. I speak as one who made that...

    CNBC TV Host Pay

Oh, get real. Income from television operations to fund salaries has been falling across the board for the past few years. A University of Missouri Journalism School study estimates ANCHORS in the 25 biggest TV markets are making an average of $130,000 this year. But the overall average is...

    Looking for Intraday Data

Thanks, I am checking out OT. Do you happen to know if it is possible to download a list, or does it need to be an individual symbol at a time? And is there any other user interface other than the DOS-type command prompts in the ReadMe file I got with the download?

    Looking for Intraday Data

Do you have - or have a good source - for intraday data for U.S. equities? I'm looking for at least 3-6 months of 5 min bars sometime over the past few years, other than most recent period. I don't need all equities, and I will give specs if you can help. Much appreciated if you can.

Is 1,000 shares per clip common?

That all depends on the stock(s) you are trading, and the liquidity. But...assuming that you are not limiting your price range or trading penny stocks, the average stock is roughly $35. 1000 shares is of course 35K. A stock at 35 can easily pull back 2 points in a day, or overnight. That...
