    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Weekly Update for week 18/50 ended 5/13/2011 Bad week, down 15K (4.3%). On Monday, ROSE gave me a drubbing with a runaway move that cost my automation 8K. Recovered nicely the rest of the week mostly through discretionary trades and was well into positive territory till Friday. Gave back...

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Same strategies more or less. Keep refining, dropping those that don't seem to work, and expanding the ones that seem to work to pick more trades. Automated has made 49K from 72 trades while discretionary has lost almost as much. I have started "picking" my discretionary trades. 250 trades in...

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Weekly Update for week 17/50 ended 5/6/2011 Impressive week, up 29K (9.2%). Very nice week for my automation, which made 32K on 18 trades. Lost a little bit with my discretionary trades. Too early to say, but I believe the adjustments I have made in the strategies, and the fact I cannot...

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Weekly Update for week 16/50 ended 4/29/2011 Bad week, down 8K (2.6%). The week started on a bad note on Monday with first trade. Faded the open on SOHU with PUT options with a illogical bearish bias after a stellar earnings. No reason for trade other than tendency of stock to sell down...

Just saw that fat-figure 2 before the 18,000. Hope you didn't believe that net loss

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Weekly Update for week 15/50 ended 4/23/2011 Moderately positive week, up 2.6K (0.8%). Couldn't get going on earnings week. Missed opportunities seem abundant, but failed to capitalize on any. Hope can do better next week. Opening Balance: 315,319 Net gain for...

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Weekly Update for week 14/50 ended 4/16/2011 Tremendous week, up 41K (14.8%). Dramatic recovery of last week's loss plus some more. Great winning percentage (12 of 18) with no major loser. Sized down the max size limit on my discretionary trade from $250K to $200K, while upping the size...

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Thanks for your charts and input. For VRUS, the move has been underway for a number of days. After several days I am probably looking for an over-extended move that would correct in the short-term not initiate a long position. Obviously we don't have to see things the same way; I would not be...

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Weekly Update for week 13/50 ended 4/9/2011 Nasty week, down 33K (10.8%). Completely gave back my recent attempts at recovery. Took several severe beatings with no big gainer to report. On Tuesday got smacked by the virus (VRUS). Faded an over-extended move that kept going till EOD. The...

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Weekly Update for week 12/50 ended 4/2/2011 Ugly week, down 19K (5.9%). It all boiled down to one day: Wednesday 30 Mar. Faded a number of over-extended plays with PUTS, all of which closed out even more over-extended and cost me dear. Looking at how to tighten the condition for those...

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Weekly Update for week 11/50 ended 3/26/2011 Negative week, down 5K (1.6%). It was a week of bad trading for the most part. Entered two many trades I have no business in, and the few good ones I found exited too soon (would lock up a gain of 5K delighted to make some money, only to check...

Why most pro traders are gamblers, and why risk control prevents success with OPM

Since most people leave their money to compound, the annual return on (1) is effectively zero, so why the choice?

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Weekly Update for week 10/50 ended 3/19/2011 Another nice week, up 23K (7.5%). It was a week of "shoulda coulda". Just failed to benefit much from the volatility, instead had quite another scare on Wed when I was too quick to call over-extension in moves, and went long (stock and options)...

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

No, that was 150 contracts (representing 15,000 shares). I wouldn't short 15000 shares of FNSR when it was already down more than 35% - the risk would be way too much. It is better done with options (max risk limited to premium paid).

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

I wish I have it laid out with a defined rule. But I don't. Normally I have a holding time-frame (intraday for the most part). If I hold for an hour or two and there is no sign of life, I would probably begin to look for an exit. Maybe a litlte bounce in my favour I could be out, but any case...

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Weekly Update for week 9/50 ended 3/12/2011 Nice week, up 27K (9%). Week of steady gains (14 of 20). The two stand-out trades were FNSR on Wed, and GMCR on Thurs. Got in with PUTS on FNSR following a dead cat bounce on Wed sometime after it opened, and closed that with a gain of 14K...

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Weekly Update for week 8/50 ended 03/05/2011 Better week, up 10K (4.8%). Cut down average size this week, and made some nice gains here and there. Still working on laying a foundation for my portfolio risk/size management. Opening Balance: 271,795 Net gain...

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

I do not consider my individual positions to be too big, but taken together on Wednesday, it was an over-exposure on the long side in a declining market. That brings me to the aspect of risk management I want to work on/develop rules for: when a signal starts generating lots of trades on the...
