Designing and Specifying Equipment for Trading

The same Passmark people has some benchmark comparisons for hard disks and SSD: http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/ Besides the CPU speed and the harddrive/SSD speed, the other components that make up a PC have become quite generic - they don't cost as much as they used to (e.g. network...

USB 3.0 Speed + Intel 320 SSD is early

Scataphagos: I am trying to learn these things. Were your Crystal Disk Mark numbers from a X25-M SSD drive? I have an Intel SSD 40GB, model # SSDSA2M040G2GC. Going through the internal SATA cable on a box with Intel i7-930 processor. My Windows 7 64-bit OS reboot takes about 40...

USB 3.0 Speed + Intel 320 SSD is early

BTW: what do you think the price erosion curve would be for SSD drives? Mark today's Intel SSD 320 series prices as a benchmark. Will come back in a year to see how prices have fallen. 4/3/2011: Intel SSD 320 series: 600GB $1062 300GB $590 160GB $313 80GB $209 40GB $127

USB 3.0 Speed + Intel 320 SSD is early

The demo video from Intel. 21 seconds to reboot. http://newsroom.intel.com/docs/DOC-1551 (demo clip #3) Quite impressive! The price of >$1000 for a 600GB is a little bit out of my reach for the time being. :)...

    Pictures of your trading stations

Does it matter? You can use any make/model with 16:9 ratio and a VESA mount in the back. Just rotate your wide monitor 90 degree when you mount it and define in Windows (only Win7 starts to support it) the monitors are in portrait mode instead of landscape mode.

    Building your own trading computer

Yeah, that's right. The PCI cards are in circuit board heaven. A shoebox above my bookshelf. At any rate, the PCI based graphics cards I bought (5400 FX), wouldn't work in Win7 64-bit anyway. For $19.99 (on rebate) a card, I felt that I didn't need to push that hard. :)

    Building your own trading computer

This is a picture inside the chassis. I ditched the generic CPU heatsink from Intel and bought a bigger heatsink with 2 cooling fans. (Though not to the extent to liquid-cool the chip.) 4 PCIe X16 graphics cards: EVGA 8400 GS. Each drives 2 monitors: 1 through VGA and 1 through DVI...

Best 6Gb Memory Kit (Triple Channel)

That may be the case. But I suspect your Mercedes owner equivalent in the trader's world most likely won't be DIY to build a computer. At any rate your post should go to the Classified forum. I have been driving 3 Yugos and they have not broken down on me yet.

    Building your own trading computer

Fantastic, WF! Glad you are enjoying your new toy! Your post reminded me to post some picture updates. My third self-built box. i7-950 processor. 6GB RAM. I chose a different X-58 motherboard for this one. MSI Big Bang X-Power. I like it because: 1) Offers 6 x PCIe X16 slots...

Dell, my last purchase and done with them

Unless, of course, your business is graphics design, movie studio, photography and journalism. :) I refused to buy a Mac because it offered a one-button only mouse. :D And I refuse to let Steve Jobs and his gangs project what they think as all I need...

    Tech Gurus - Please Help

You are welcome tomahawk. Forgot to mention that I ran a HP box with 2 x PCI cards and 1 x PCIe-16 card to drive 6 monitors under Windows Vista for a couple of years. But mine were not Radeon. I used PNY Technologies cards, NVidia chips. They ran okay. Good luck and let us know how it went.

    Tech Gurus - Please Help

Should be no reason that you must have one PCIe-16 and one PCI. It only depends on the availability of the bus types on your computer. When PCIe bus first came out, many box makers tried to provide some kind of transition to ease the pain of customers having to buy new hardware (as PCIe and...

Dell, my last purchase and done with them

I have a few HP computers. If this would make you feel any better... HP is doing similar thing. If you call for tech support, and especially late at night (after 5pm PST)... almost guarantee that you would reach someone in India to answer your call. Courteous... in a strange way...

    USB-to-DVI adapter that supports 1920 x 1080 resolution

I couldn't resist it. I had bought another USB-to-VGA adapter to try: SIIG USB-to-VGA Pro http://www.siig.com/it-products/usb/converters/usb-2-0-to-vga-pro.html The specs clearly said it supports the 1920 x 1080 resolution. This model also uses the DisplayLink driver software. And...
