I traded GLD options as a market maker before 2011. Vol was higher back then with front months around 17 to 20 and back months as high as 28ish. I have not looked at that in years but I expect the entire curve is lower.

SPX options are priced vs the SP or ES future, not the cash, unless very close to expiration. SPY options are priced vs the SPY ETF.

Check with you tax expert to confirm, but all futures trading is MTM so no trader election is needed. And for equity/option trading, it is an election on your part, not required.
