short straddle, what if expires ATM

Decisions to exercise are made during the day when price isn't at the strike and when people are using that exercise to cover other positions. So AFAIK, you could be assigned despite the favorable expiry. Therefore, why would you take any chance whatsoever with pin risk?

PDT inquiry using different strikes/expirations ???

The first part I agree on but not on the second. If the close and re-open occur on the same day, that's a round trip.

PDT inquiry using different strikes/expirations ???

If you make a round trip in the same trading day, it's a day trade. If you do this four or more times in any five consecutive business day period, you're a pattern day trader. So just pair up your trades and see how many were round trips the same day.

    Sector Breakdown

For 10 maybe 15 years I've used a web site called ClearStation that provided quotes and broke all listed stocks into sectors and sub-sectors. For example, Utilities might be broken down into 1) Electric, 2) Nat. Gas and 3)Water. They've gone belly up ("web site retired"). Anyone know of...

Low risk way to make a 66% return (unleveraged) in 2012

Santorum has nothing against anal sex. He just wants to stop minorities from breeding Republicans out of existence (his deisre to ban contraceptives) :)

When you exercise a long option, do you get stock instantly or end of day?

Assinment/exercise occurs after the close. The + or - position will show up in the AM.

    Knowing when to sell

Apart from tea leaves, astrolgy, and Elite Trader experts, there's no magic answer. Consider scaling out of positions. With a gain, sell part of your position, locking in some profit and hopefully, repatriating your investment capital. Then run a disciplined stop on the balance, real or...

Puts Impl. Vol too high, Call Impl. Vol too low

Puts "appear" expensive because of the high indicative rate due to borrowability issues. So no reversal possible. You'll "overpay" for any puts you buy to offset the directional risk of the puts you want to short - negating the juice you're chasing.

    IB and option combo reporting

Hey Don, I too am not sure what the OP is after. You're right, if you leave the order intact on the Trading page then it's clear. For me, it gets a little confusing when you have multiple positions in the same UL, especially if the orders have common legs. The trading page will only...

    IB and option combo reporting

Because IB only allows a look back for 5 days, it's a problem if you want to see the original trade. Therefore you need to do a scrren capture (PRT SCR) or use the EXPORT TODAY'S RESULTS feature from the TRADES page. For more complex positions or positions where I've adjusted, I use a...

long ITM call vs OTM call spread

With verticals, it's all a choice about R/R, probability, and degree of bullishness. Lower cost OTM spread has lower probability of higher profit (aggessive) whereas ITM spread is the opposite (higher prob of smaller profit and conservative). You use a vertical when mildly bullish versus the...

    Options trade during a Crash?

Right but if it's something that should be worth 10 cts and you have a GTC order in place to buy it at $2 (placed when the UL is 50 pts higher), he'll be buying that $1 x $2 call when the UL is 75 or more pts lower and now deep OTM. Ouch, big time.

    Options trade during a Crash?

The only time I can remember where options were untradeable was the crash of '87. Many B/A spreads were several dollars wide and many option series didn't trade since the MM's just walked away. Yes, trade were busted in 2010. The main stock exchanges canceled all trades that transacted 60%...
