It makes me wonder how many of their boomer parents are "strategic defaulters"...So you can have two generations living under one roof with no mortgage payments. Ten years from now we'll finally figure out that the economy was held together by the vast number of families living rent/mortgage free.

Even though I'm on his ignore list, OHMS is completely correct. I went to a "Top 20" school and I can count on one hand the number of profs who WEREN'T radical socialist/leftist types. Every liberal arts course focussed on either the "white man's burden" or some other progressive social cause...

He did indeed capture that vote...The irony is that he isn't far enough left for that crowd and too "centrist". The right couldn't stand him from day one...all that's left are the unions and the blacks. In fact, he's the prototype of a Cook County politician...that's about all they ever really...

It's an interesting question, but I'd argue that people who are less inclined to spend that $3,000 or $6,000 per month on a mortgage payment might have different consumption patterns when compared to the where and how that $6,000 towards the mortgage would make its way into the broader economy.

US consumption is down dramatically over the past 4 years. I'd reckon Europe must be likewise. Perhaps the consumption in China, India, etc has filled in that gap, I have no idea and there is so much conflicting data out there, that it's hard to draw any concrete conclusions.

Gas prices were $1.00 per gallon or thereabouts in the late 90s early 00s. I can't see how a quadrupling in a decade makes this nation "spoiled". As far as taxes go, that's another non-starter. Taxes don't begin and end at the Federal and State level, there are so many miscellaneous taxes...
