Spitznagel: Not All Risk Mitigation Is Created Equal

I believe Spitznagel is being a little misleading here. He finds that lower volatility improves geometric returns but he is not measuring actual dollars earned (which is more of a function of arithmetic returns). Its possible to have improved CAGRs without a single extra dollar earned. This...

How to legally maintain that I am subscribed to Interactive Brokers?

IB wont do that but you might need a few printed account statements in case the broker goes bust and you need to claim the SPIC insurance

Spitznagel: Not All Risk Mitigation Is Created Equal

He talks about using options to raise the CAGR of a portfolio, despite the fact that the options returns themselves have a 0% average return (no risk premium for buyers) http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-11-21/spitznagel-warns-not-all-risk-mitigation-created-equal "True risk mitigation...

Peterffy (IB) takes out ad in WSJ to warn against BTC futures

This must be why GBTC (the pseudo BTC ETF) is unshortable at IB. FWIW, the clearing firm Vision does allow shorting of it, they just require 200% margins. I'm very curious to see what will be the min margin requirement for shorting the BTC futures across multiple brokers

How Reinsurers Help Hedge Funds Shelter Taxes

really? you analized all of them? you had access to their private books to know whats in it? the one I took a look at (Einhorn reinsurer) looked pretty legit to me. Its one of the few with public financials. I think Loeb also has, I doubt his would be any different. They are both following their...

A 2-3% Correction Could Wipe Out Most VIX Short Sellers

Spitznagel has a backtest in this book. It shows how an index position that is paired with some put buying (really way OTM puts) can outperform an index position by itself but only if the put buying is reserved to periods where the market is overvalued (by his definition)

A 2-3% Correction Could Wipe Out Most VIX Short Sellers

I'm referring to the really way OTM stuff. In those, what is not in the backtest data is even more important than what is in it. People will draw confidence from 10-15 year backtests, then one day their account gets liquidated by their broker

A 2-3% Correction Could Wipe Out Most VIX Short Sellers

A 2-3% Correction Could Wipe Out Most VIX Short Sellers

you dont take losses on the diversified portfolio because there is no need to. selling things like stocks, bonds, gold, real estate and going into cash, is an asset management decision. And long-term its likely to be a poor choice given that cash will underform all other assets. I rather own an...

A 2-3% Correction Could Wipe Out Most VIX Short Sellers

Seems lunacy to be selling vol now. What makes sense is to buy some way OTM SPX puts to hedge a diversified passive portfolio

Is Warren Buffett blind to tail risks/risks of ruin?

I agree, that trade couldn't have taken brk down but apparently, Buffett thought his company was at risk of going under that year. From thorp's book

"Not caring" about the money in order to win big

This is a lot easier said than done, I find it very hard not to care about the money and be motivated at the same time. Starting at charts is not fun, if not for the money, why do it?
