    "Scaling out" is inferior behavior

I do. I scale in because I want to limit my risk. If it goes up I'll add, if it goes down I'll take a small loss.

the myth of averaging down for traders

Not much difference in my book. Could be that trader 2 has done his analysis and feels that he is in the trade for the long term. It's called dollar cost averaging. I don't know how many shares I want to aquire when I enter a trade. What I know is how much of my capital I want to risk. If the...

    "Scaling out" is inferior behavior

That's how I see it. We probably disagree on adding to a winning position vs averaging down. I assume that with fundamental analysis if you like a stock you will add if the price drops. (everyone likes a sale). In my case I just take a small loss and wait for another set up. Different strokes...

Who Thinks Swing Trading is Dangerous?

That hasn't been my experience. Some stock run opposite to the market. 2022 saw energy and discretionary move opposite to the general market. As Cramer says there is always a bull market somewhere.

Who Thinks Swing Trading is Dangerous?

Why would a trader worry about diversifcation? I mean you don't want all your capital tied up in one position but 5 to 10 is more than enough. When the market is rising there is usually no problem finding good positions. When the market is falling you want to be on the sidelines or short.

    "Scaling out" is inferior behavior

What's your understanding of scaling. Mine is to add to positions that are moving in my favor.

Not sure I understand 2% wieght by gross. Is this 2% of the total portfolio? How does this wieghting work when you are hedging positions?

I'm looking after a reviewer for my trading system

Marketing strategy: Do you have any of your own capital? You put up say 10% of the capital. The investor supplies the other 90%. The investor opens an account and you have trading authority. Only the investor can withdraw. You split profits 50/50. If you have a drawdown equal to your investment...

Who Thinks Swing Trading is Dangerous?

It hasn't happened yet. Flash crash was close but I didn't sell anything. My plan calls for me to see what happens by the end of the day. The following day if price trades below the low of the day then I close the position. I trail a stop below the prior day after that. What I have found is...

Who Thinks Swing Trading is Dangerous?

I have held positions for years if they continue to move in my direction. The one rule I have is to not hold any losers in my portfolio.

Who Thinks Swing Trading is Dangerous?

When I day traded I spent most of the day in front of a monitor. I'd then spend a few hours after the market closed researching and looking for the next days trades. I'm not sure of the exact returns because I pull cash out of my accounts as needed. I moved to swing trading and found that I was...

Who Thinks Swing Trading is Dangerous?

I moved from day trading to swing trading and found little difference in my returns with a lot less stress. Any danger of holding overnight or for longer periods of time is overcome as the market can move violently in both directions. Some you win; some you lose. I trade stocks with little to...

    "Scaling out" is inferior behavior

@bone Can you walk us through your process of scaling profit? Mine is to take 1/3 into strenght, 1/3 on a trend break and the last on a MA break.

    "Scaling out" is inferior behavior

Can we differentiate between scaling in and averaging down? Scaling in to me is adding to a position that has moved in my favor. Averaging down is adding to a position that has moved against me. I scale in. I rarely average down.

    Baron's Crypto Trading Journal

True. But to keep things in perspective we use percentage as a measure. That way we don't have to disclose the dollar value of an investment. We just have to keep in mind that a 50% loss requires a 100% gain. If we have a 75% gain then lose 50% we are underwater.

So I assume that with all your experience and the time and effort you spent getting licensed that you haven't been able to outperform a buy and hold SPY strategy. Not that it matters one way or the other. It's just a benchmark I use to determine if your time is well spent. Good luck with your...
