They do it because checks bounce. I have had checks bounce back more than 2 weks after they supposedly cleared, and one of these checks was from BIG money center bank - JPM. They are just protecting themselves as I would (and will from now on).

I have only seen 400:1 leverage with brokers who are market makers/have dealing desks. And that leverage was for low balance accounts, because, quite rankly, they want you to crap out your balance. I don't believe you will find any dealers willing to extend that kind of leverage for account...

Gas in the pump will never go down as quickly as the futures price because the station owner will not sell his gasoline for a price that is cheaper than what he paid for it. This is why retail gas always lags the market on the way down. (Now up is a different story!)
