IB is not the lowest cost futures broker for an active trader. The lowest cost futures broker is not one firm fits all and depends on how many RTs you do a month and your account size. It also depends if you are doing retail business or exchange member business.

Please read the directions for Form 6781 and Schedule D. Once your futures losses are transferred from Form 6781 to Schedule D they are treated exactly the same as any other investment losses.
