My first post. A little introduction, and a wish to find out how to backtest.

I use Amibroker. Its good if you learn quick and can handle reading a manual. But for executing backtests with stops, to work properly I had to enlist the help of Graham... Amibroker users know him well.

If you were hired at a hedge fund, would you entirely disclose your strategy?

I don't think it does. About 70% sure. (regarding SSF) Don't know what the deal is with Euro Stocks. Probably Ib won't let you PDT them either. Stick with Euro Stoxx 50 or something liquid.

    Carry Trades and the Yen

makes sense to me that lowering of interest rates globally to "back up the U.S" would result in the carry trade ending.

    Risk vs. trade size

go to a poker game with $40 on the 1/2 no limit holdem tables at your local casino. Youll discover the lesson you need to learn. It'll be cheap compared to the alternative.

Can a system be profitable just by constantly rebalancing the basket itself?

Yes theoretically, its called a universal portfolio. Read up on it, though there isn't any simple explanation available. Transactions costs add up. Thomas Cover- http://www.stanford.edu/dept/news/news/2000/april12/universal-412.html
