    THat hot HOusing Market....

The only real estate that I would be investing in right now would be prime locations (downtown) in major Argentinian cities. I think they will sort out the mess but it will take them a while. Consider it a contrarian move.

spectre, agreed. We are, as candle used to repeatedly state, brethren. Lets not forget that. btw where is that guy?

    THat hot HOusing Market....

chasinfla, that's an interesting way of looking at real estate. I was first introduced to that (P/E) concept by Alex Doulis, a Canadian author. He also flips the P/E ratio to get a "yield". I wonder how many people do that kind of calculation befoe buying? [rhetorical] btw Doulis also...

    Chart pattern percentages

Getting back to the original idea of the thread.....the problem with starting out with such a premise is that what one person defines as a head and shoulder pattern is not what another would define as such.

What is that old saying? Aahh, yes: Those that pick bottoms....end up with smelly fingers. :p

the trend is up, market has bottomed.

While the furr was flying on this thread, I thought "wouldn't it be funny if the market actually closed up today?" soon after there was a powerful rally and I just chuckled. As Todd Harrison used to say "She's minxy!"

    Closed-End Funds?

I agree with others. If you want to formalize it a bit then use an LLC but otherwise you can just use this from IB: Financial Advisor Separately Managed Accounts Beginning August 1st, Interactive Brokers will offer Financial Advisors the ability to open Separately Managed Accounts for...

vulture, exactly! But in the Clinton era we did not have negative real rates as we do now (well according to Greenspan and BLS we are hovering at the zero mark). Here is the graph: Real rates are in blue and red. Blue above zero, red below.

the trend is up, market has bottomed.

darkhorse, what stood out most from that Zeal article was how the US is manipulating the CPI numbers. I don't think anyone can argue that you can increase money supply the way Greenspan has and at the same time have a tame inflation outlook. They have to be pressuring the CPI numbers down...

    IB's Short Inventory

def, well as I mentioned in my original post, I wanted to short DIO around the middle of March 2002. Wasn't possible. I watched it break support at around $6 and waited to see if there was a pullback and whether I could get any on the pullback. There was a weak one a few days after to...

darkhorse, I just read this: http://www.zealllc.com/2002/realgold2.htm and it really scared me. I heard Jim Rogers on CNBC last week talking along very similar lines.

    IB's Short Inventory

def, Thanks for the reply. Actually I doubt that others beat me to the inventory: Date-----Shares Short---Avg. D. Vol-----Ratio 05/15------204,924----------61,141-------3.35 04/15------120,567--------129,620--------0.93 03/15------135,716--------311,887--------0.44 As you can...

    IB's Short Inventory

I know we've mentioned this before but I haven't read anything that would make me feel better about the situation. It seems to persist and follow this pattern: 1] I find a stock that I would love to short to kingdom come 2] IB does not have it in their short inventory 3] The stock...

the trend is up, market has bottomed.

The falling dollar (vs Euro) is a bit of a red herring. First of all, it helps more than it hurts (as long as it is not sever) by making US goods cheaper to outsiders. I'm also very skeptical of the Euro economic performance as I have first hand accounts of things being quite bleak there...

    THat hot HOusing Market....

Calling a top is very, very, very difficult. How many incredible smart and experienced people called the market top in 98? I agree that the real estate market is forming a bubble but you just never know how far Greenspan will go to defend and prolong it.
