The Rise and Fall of Mechanical Trading Systems

Or is it just luck? Funny, when I've started a similar thread back in 2001 (loooong time ago!) about manual traders- why some make money - is it skill or luck? most people responding were outraged- saying of course when a trader makes money its a skill.....

The Rise and Fall of Mechanical Trading Systems

Probably its true- in the long run, all of these systems could end up losing. But some of the systems available seem to be exceptions. Take a look at the ranking according to number of days since TS began tracking the strategy. I wonder whether the outlier systems will continue delivering...

Cruiser system still holds a EURUSD short trade. https://strategynetwork.tradestation.com/StrategyNetworkStore/StrategyPerformance.aspx?ParentId=1076 Who knows where it will close it. It would take a lot of stop losses to wipe out such huge gain. How it is possible that this system makes...

yes, i'd also bet this is the case. but one thing puzzles me- why these systems made money since they were published on TS? is it just luck? if it is, these systems should start losing soon.

yeah i know that for a manual trader any analysis or any strategy is a pure curve-fit. only his beautiful mind and emotions from the bottom of the heart are a valid arsenal in the trading battle!

The Rise and Fall of Mechanical Trading Systems

i take the challange. please ask Art! fully agree that most public systems are a waste of time. BUT! perhaps there are few exceptions worth tracking and researching. my bet is known since the first post- we will likely not find them. however, let's give credit to the systems i've...

the rules of the winners (if they will turn out to be winners) would have to be, sort of, reverse engineered. or at least, just a general conclusions: frequency of trades, holding period, etc.

its precisely what Winton, Transtrend, Lynx are doing! sharing great systems to trade for other people... with other peoples money. for a fraction of income. thats legitimate. while sharing systems online for a monthly fee is not legitimate. interesting logic.

and yes, most of the ETers are cheap wannabe millionaires. partly because they do not invest in Winton, Medallion, Transtrend or top performing systems. thats why it will be good to lift our poor status by finding quality systems to trade, right?

The Rise and Fall of Mechanical Trading Systems

i assume that observations from this journal can be very precious in sense that: if we will find at least 3 systems making new highs, 2, 4, 6 months from now, on top of new highs made in the past, while 357 other systems are flat or down, it will be a great lesson- what other systems are...

The Rise and Fall of Mechanical Trading Systems

its exactly what my journal will show- TS network systems will fall apart and no public system will show a positive return in the long run. if otherwise, it will remain a mysterious, amusing phenomenon for further research.

The Rise and Fall of Mechanical Trading Systems

if these are their weakest performing systems (the ones i've selected), what are the best ones? and why in such case they would want to sell the weak ones for 99 bucks, while producing 50k /month from trading the top systems with their own money?

The Rise and Fall of Mechanical Trading Systems

thats likely not true. simons medallion fund was making 80-100% per year on assets $5B. on the other hand- show me small, 1-5 million fund making 100% per year. very rare... no one making it year after year. except medallion.

The Rise and Fall of Mechanical Trading Systems

developers on TS strategy network also do not sell systems, only signals. the systems i've selected (links in previous posts) collectively produce MUCH better results (in % terms) than Winton or any other respected manager. But this is only history. From this magic moment, the best public...
