Question on VIX options - call - am I understanding this correctly?

The VRO is based on the opening price of SPX options. They are listed here http://cfe.cboe.com/cfe-products/vx-cboe-volatility-index-vix-futures/settlement-information-for-vix-derivatives/vix-settlement-series

    Bitcoin futures

Except you are buying into a cash settled index, you are not actually buying any bitcoins.

Why can't many professional floor traders make money in electronic trading markets?

As a floor trader, the customer came to you and gave up edge to you. When the floor trader went upstairs, he became the customer. That's why most did not transition to profitable upstairs traders.

Fat finger on TGT or what?

What happened here was the Dec 57/53 put spread traded at .12 on the Amex. The prices used where .63 and .75 on each leg. ( the .63 was the price you saw). When spreads trade on certain exchanges they use prices between the quoted prices on that exchange, but sometimes the prices will be...

    E-mini S&P 500 settlement on 30Nov - is it wrong?

The futures are marked where they "should be" based on the closing index price of the SPX. SPX options are also remarked based on this figure as well. Basically as @truetype mentioned, trades after 3pm ct are thrown out, where normally they are marked based on their last trades at 3:15.

Positive correlation between S&P 500 and VIX

This is what the VIX index is based on. The VIX future sometimes has a mind of its own.

Positive correlation between S&P 500 and VIX

Jimmy, I have been trading this spread off and on for many years (vix future vs emini spx future). Every now and then you will see a day like today. When you have an extreme rally and the vix goes up. I was looking to sell the vix future and sell the emini, but never pulled the trigger. I...

    Autospreaders

You may want to check out WEX as well. They have a pretty robust Spread trading program. I use it for equity and index options and stocks, but they state it works for futures as well. http://www.tradewex.com/Home/TradingPlatform

'Teasing' Bids/Asks to narrow a spread by submitting/cancelling orders - what's this pattern called?

Many market makers will have a joining/matching program when they quote. I did as well when I was quoting electronically. In a stock without much volume, they will leave their quotes fairly wide. No real advantage to making a tighter quote as they may be joined. Keep a wide quote and when a...

    Etrade options marking methodology

Funny, I have never dealt with a broker/clearing firm who has used anything other then the mid point for marks, including Goldman, Merrill, Apex, ING, and many other past clearing firms.

    Execution order for complex orders/spreads

So much depends on the product and the broker. At one time the cutoff for the SPX for TD/TOS was under 10 contracts went to the COB, while over went to the pit and the broker had the option of putting in the COB. Not sure if that has changed. I have had different experiences at IB, they will...

Ha, was trying to not be, lol. Note that my comments were directed at single listed SPX options only.

    I love IB/TWS...

Glad you got a good fill, but this is really a function of the CBOE, rather than IB. IB routed your order to the CBOE COB where it was filled electronically by their electronic auction system. You would have had the same fill with any other broker that sent the order to the COB (and almost all...

    Underpriced SPX options at expiration

I don't think most stop quoting 10 mins before the close, I was saying I did. It is much harder to accurately price cash settled index options, such as the SPX and OEX, in the moments before the close on expiration. Normally the options are priced off the SP futures, but the price/direction of...

    Underpriced SPX options at expiration

I was a MM for 25 years in the OEX, quoting electronically for the last two of those years, before I left the floor. For the time I quoted electronically, I would stop about 10 minutes before the close on expiration. You are right, the models broke down in the last minutes of trading on...

    Underpriced SPX options at expiration

@lawrence-lugar, This is a strategy I have been doing for some time. It has been successful. It is one of the many types of trading strategies that I do. I find these types of trades come and go, now premium is cheaper then I think it should be, later on that might not be the case at the end...

    Underpriced SPX options at expiration

No prediction. Much more of an art than science. The options just look cheap to me and I try to make about 5 times my money on half of the options, letting the others run. Would be an interesting back study for someone more technically oriented then me.
